@friendinrussian the concept has very little consistent descriptive content in Jp (and to a lesser but significant degree Cn) accounts of pre-modernity. but imo this isn’t necessarily “bad”; it was a synecdoche for understandings of the relationship between the past/colonial period/future

So I don't want to assume anything, but it seems the specific social structure associated with Western European Feudalism (military nobility, reciprocal relationships between King and Lords, social codes of honor among the military) seems to only have an analogy in Japan, right?

Btw, the earliest dates I have found for Benjamin’s utter contempt and even hatred for Heidegger was 1916, thirteen years earlier (!). There are letters from him thrashing Heidegger’s articles and all.
