odin layout is slowly coming along... why is making ui layout more fun to me than making uis?

It's all about those performance optimizations. It could never have done it so fast, prior to their recent focus on optimizations. Lol 😂 in all seriousness though, I recently had to finally leave windows, and now just run it in a VM for the couple programs I need which don't run in Linux or even wine. Sad, but Microsoft forced it to be this way.

@ThePrimeagen @TheGingerBill And almost all of the languages syntax makes sense too. I love Odin, and cannot wait to be writing it full time, hopefully sometime in the nearish future. Also, @TheGingerBill is awesome, so of course Odin is awesome.

I have really loved my time exploring Odin-lang It's crazy having a language that is batteries included. Using a language that knows what it's job is and is good at it. 0 dependencies is bliss

@tsoding Dang, I haven't run into that before. Glad to see someone had a reasonable answer though. But without knowing how word addressable machines work, I don't really understand why the underlying mechanisms make it so.

This is the part of pure C I never understood. Why isn't void** compatible with int**? void* is compatible with int*, sizeof(void*) == sizeof(int*). So the covariant compatibility of void* across several levels of indirection makes perfect sense to me. Am I missing anything?

By any actual measure I am aware of, China is economically just as bad now or worse than it was then, but people just hadn't yet understood how the CCP fudged the numbers and manipulated their currency to keep up appearances

@Jonathan_Blow How do you define peak? TAM? There are way more gamers now than there was back then. China’s economy has improved a lot and it grew the overall game market significantly.

Peak video game industry was probably around 2012. Is it possible to ever get back there?

@Swizec @ThePrimeagen @theo I would suggest looking up Cal Newport. He is an "in the trenches" engineer who has worked on AI and distributed computing for Google, I think. (Might have been Microsoft, I can't remember which, but certain it was one of the two)

He has a point in general, not you two specifically because you're pretty great. I want to hear opinions from people who *arent* entertainers. Bring on those voices. People in the trenches doing the thing. Not their CEO or whatever (too hype, too little substance). I want to hear from the people digging the trenches, what's their opinion on the future of trenches? Where do they see all this going? What pressures are they feeling on the ground level?

The "piratesoftware is over" industrial complex is still producing videos recaping the same events over and over, it's kind of insane how much this man is getting milked. All these videos make it sound like stuff is still happening, but no, they are all retellings.

@ThePrimeagen I have to say, I do like the copilot and cursor auto-complete, and tab features for repetitive code. But really dislike this whole vibe coding and agents thing, so much of the code I see coming out of these, is pretty bad, with way more code than is needed & even bad logic too

A small piece of advice to up and coming creators. Do not let LLMs write your scripts. Find your voice, even if its semi-coherent like mine. Its better than just sounding so average

@taigakanak @valigo Unfortunately there is a popular belief that has been prevalent in the Linux ecosystem, that dynamic linking is superior, "for security" updates and patches.

@valigo Binaries from 2000 work fine on modern linux, provided they are are statically linked (except for glibc, but dynamically linked glibc is backwards compatible till glibc-2.0 released 30 years ago). The issue is just that nobody bothers, since OSS is released in source form.

A lot of cope around Linux userspace ABI today. Cope and argue all you want, but a graphical program that was compiled and worked 10 years ago, just wouldn't run on Linux today, unless it is win32 application. Think about it.

I do have a couple statically linked apps that utilize x11 (libxcb) I wrote back in 2014 when I was really first learning writing Linux desktop applications, which do still run. But nothing other than those do, at least not without recompiling them and screwing around with their rpath to load the older .so files that have to be loaded because the newer versions shipped with newer distros are not backwards compatible. It is a shame, Linux has better backwards compatibility with win32 app than its own native binaries.

Actually, there is a slim chance that some pure X11 application will work even if it was compiled over 10 years ago, now that I think about it. But maybe not

If he had been walking on the sidewalk, where pedestrians are supposed to walk, and not down the middle of the freaking road, like he owned the place, blocking the cops, flipping them the bird, and then raging out and punching their window; I think this wouldn't have happened. They would of just drove down the road, probably not even noticing him on the sidewalk. This is his own fault, and treated officers like that is unacceptable. Just think if this is how he treated the police, how do you think he would treat a regular guy or girl.

@Rohaan4272 @honeymoon250 I think only if they took the time, to go through the legal process. If they did not do that, then he will have to leave, and they will have to go through the process. But given his record, I don't know that he will be allowed to return (or stay).
