One of best insults against the British from the Spanish speaking world - from countries like Argentina and Spain especially - is the accusation the British are ‘pirates’. Endearingly antiquated, confusing to average Brit too since the Age of Sail and of Elizabethan privateers has fallen out of the culture as a common reference point. The Spanish must have been really upset about their sunken galleons 400 years ago for the pirate reference to permeate into their wider culture and then stick around so thoroughly for so long.
