I’m not an expert on US elections, but attacking one of the most popular people in America, let alone the leader of the Catholic Church, doesn’t seem like a prudent electoral strategy. But maybe Trump doesn’t actually care about future elections anymore because he won’t be on the ballot? How else can one explain his attack on the Pope? What’s your explanation?

In Bishop Barron’s call for President Trump to apologize to Pope Leo XIV, he writes this:
“I am very grateful for the many ways that the Trump administration has reached out to Catholics and other people of faith. It has been a high honor to serve on the Religious Liberty Commission. No President in my lifetime has shown a greater dedication to defending our first liberty.”
