It’s just social currency. Here let’s do me. I was once married to a woman. I have been told I have diagnoses but also I’m weird enough I could easily just self diagnose for leftist points. Ok so I’m queer, disabled, neurodivergent, ADHD, POTS, mobility issues, chronic pain, PCOS. She beats me with the trans though so I’m lower on the totem pole of social currency. I also don’t look like shit so I’m not as queer. Somehow being a hot gay turned to mullet gay. Thankfully I left that scene before all the women got micro bangs and penises. I’ll add that I live in a rural food desert on indigenous land or something else for half a point. Maybe I’ll just call myself gender fluid and I just present as feminine and use she/her pronouns but I’m still trans because it’s fluid. A slow moving fluid. ACTUALLY come to think of it I own all her labels. I will now catapult myself above her because I am fat. Obese pride. GOTCHA. But also let’s acknowledge that all social groups have a currency of sorts. Among some women I get points for being a mother, but then lose points for adopting or for infertility. I am married. I am a grandmother. A business owner. Homeowner. All of these are also currency. The key here is to look at the outcomes of investing in gaining these status points consciously or not. What do you contribute by embracing and announcing every possible status marker of perceived exclusion? It’s a hostile social control. You demand to be perceived. You demand to be accommodated. The investment in shared exclusion and merit points for perceived or real disabilities is not how a group thrives. It just isn’t. Being *seen* and cared for with disabilities is absolutely necessary. But that being who you are? Who you announce? The tagline of the bio? What is my goal in announcing these labels? What need does it meet? Is it to be understood? I have lifelong friends who don’t know my medical history. I am 40 and people are still shocked to learn how gay my 20s were. Why? Because I am not defined by the proximity of my bits to the bits of other people. I announce my own labels. Mom. Wife. Sister. The things that matter to me. My family matters to me. My faith matters to me. It will never stop being odd that a mental health diagnosis would be the thing that ultimately matters. I’m just a middle aged woman who walks funny and has great kids I really enjoy. Maybe if we get close enough I’ll tell you why I walk like that. In my philosophy of feminism class at UNC 20 years ago we learned that women internalize misogyny and define themselves in relationships to others. I am mom. I am wife. Perhaps ultimately they were right. What they can’t argue is that I am also happy. Fulfilled. Perhaps the labels that help you sleep well at night and wake up content are the ones we should seek first. Or keep defining yourself as a POTS patient. That might feel good, too.

Yet another excellent case for legal reform. Any minimally honest person should be able to concede this is not right. Nick Reiner is guilty to a certainty % far greater than that we call sufficient in every other area of life. The evidence for his guilt is about as strong as the evidence that babies need milk. Obviously there should be *some* procedure before he’s thrown in a cage forever. But it doesn’t need to be this, hearings upon hearings, motions growing on motions, etc. Pay off the lawyer’s guild some other way - possibly it would be better to just hand them 3% of GDP for being so darn good at their wordcel homework - but for god’s sake stop letting their jobs program obstruct actual justice.

the issue is, what does it mean to not “tolerate” it? what do we center, our comfort or their needs? when we treat a homeless person in crisis as antisocial behavior that’s imposing on us, we usher in reactionary “solutions” that push them out of sight without fixing anything.
