@JerryTurin @zelinarxy Sure, it's a social signal and lubricant. But plenty of people don't want or need to drink in order to feel comfortable letting their guard down around others, showing their true selves to others, etc. You can be an open book without having an Old Fashioned.

Because part of the rationale for drinking is to demonstrate relaxation, trust of others, ability to led down your guard, be open to other people, forge a new relationship, drop barriers. Someone with an aversion is not someone inherently trusting or trustworthy, or willing to engage is a typical social contract. There's a reason it's existed in every culture, why it's a feature of weddings, celebrations, accepting new comers, business dealings, etc. Like shaking hands was a demonstration of no intent to stab or slash. A letting down of guard. A forging of connection.
