But this is where the argument collapses under its own weight. White is not a stable category. It is a social designation that has been continuously redrawn to include and exclude as political convenience demanded. Within living memory, Italians and Greeks were not considered white in the United States or Australia. They were southern Europeans — Catholic, swarthy, suspect. The very people whose civilisation supposedly forms the foundation of the West were, by the racial logic their defenders now deploy, not quite white enough. So, when the outrage demands fidelity to a white Helen, it is not appealing to an ancient standard. open.substack.com/pub/0millennia…

The Odyssey feels like Stalingrad for conservative antiwoke culture warriors because they tried to go after one of the worlds most famous filmmakers and ordinary people are like shut up nerds

People are sad because they have internalised a fictional story about "the West" and they think it's being destroyed. From my essay: "What exactly is “the West”? Not rhetorically. Literally. When people invoke it in debates like this, they imagine a continuous civilisational lineage: ancient Greece to Rome, Rome to the Renaissance, the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, the Enlightenment to the liberal democracies of Europe and North America. A thread running unbroken across three thousand years, carrying with it the values they believe are now under threat by a Black Helen of Troy. Reason. Democracy. Individual freedom. The inheritance. It is a powerful story. I use the word, “story” precisely— the west as defined above is a fiction. The category “the West” as a coherent civilisation with ancient Greece at its origin was largely assembled during the nineteenth century. European imperial powers needed an origin story — like all empires — one that explained why they occupied the pinnacle of human development and were therefore entitled to govern everyone else. A lineage was constructed: Greece to Rome, Rome to Europe, Europe to empire. Like the best kind of propaganda, elements of that story are true. The seamless continuity was manufactured. Greece was recruited for purposes the Greeks themselves would not have recognised, stripped of its Mediterranean messiness and handed back as a clean European inheritance." open.substack.com/pub/0millennia…

I read the Odyssey in high school and fell in love with it and it's exciting to live through a genuine mass cultural phenomenon. Also, cynicism isn't compulsory yet. x.com/Lacertosus_776…

@clairlemon I struggle to understand why you, or anyone for that matter, is getting so excited about this. This month's Geatest Film of All Time which will be totally forgotten by Christmas.

From my essay: "Myths are not ethnographic documents. Every generation remakes them in its own image — because that is precisely what makes them myths rather than history. Every culture that made contact with these stories painted themselves into them. The Florentine painters did it. The Pre-Raphaelites did it. They all made Helen of Troy look like them. Nolan is doing it now. His cast, diverse and unmistakably contemporary, is his way of saying what Homer’s bards said to every room they ever worked: this story is us. Nolan isn’t erasing Homer. He’s doing what the tradition has always demanded." open.substack.com/pub/0millennia…

The pre-release fury over Nolan’s The Odyssey is just sitting there now that the film is a massive hit Why are people fine with brown civilisations turned into literal monsters in 300, but outraged by a Black Helen of Troy? See Link below

The claim is about the build-up to Enzo Fernández’s 85th-minute equalizer (assisted by Messi) in the 2026 WC semi-final vs England (final score 1-2). England appealed for offside on Messi. VAR reviewed it and confirmed he was onside. Some freeze-frames look close from certain angles, but the tech and better views showed it was correctly onside. No full broadcast graphic was shown (common for non-marginal build-up checks), which sparked the debate. The goal stood.

🚨 FIFA has displayed VAR images for every single offside call in the World Cup, except when Messi was Clearly Offside against England Before Making the Assist England Could've been playing the World Cup final against Spain if it wasn't for FIFA blatantly favouring Argentina🤯

Joe, you’re great, but how can even reasonable people like you say, “Sure, we launched a surprise attack in the middle of negotiations on behalf of a foreign power and have been bombing civilian infrastructure for months, but that doesn’t mean Iran gets to shoot back.” We attacked them, the President repeatedly has threatened to end Iranians’ historical existence as a people, and they have every right to use the means at their disposal to defend themselves. I’m a veteran, I don’t like saying this, but it’s the truth. I mourn the US servicemembers, but Iran didn’t kill them - Trump and Netanyahu did.
Joe Kent@joekent16jan19

Tonight we will have to hit Iran hard in response to our troops being killed in Jordan. After that, we need to end this before it escalates further. Strike & simultaneously pull our forces out—remove Iran’s leverage and move on to economic negotiations. Restore order.

I honestly can't believe that conservatives--of all people--are angry about a blockbuster, mass-market film adaptation of Homer's Odyssey that is getting rave reviews by critics & audiences alike. 🙃
