Poker is a century-old game. Here’s why I’m bullish on Duper as a Poker challenger:
Poker originated in the 18th century. Despite the fun, its spread was slow, decentralized, and in various different forms. This only changed in the 70s when Poker tournaments entered Vegas with huge prize pools and produced the first champions, which attracted a lot more people to the game. Since then, Poker entered popular culture as the go-to wagering game, and has stayed that way thanks to online Poker, spectating, world tours, and many other developments.
On the surface, Duper is a war strategy game. But deep down, it’s a social wagering game with as much fun as Poker if not more. This is not an exaggeration — ask any active Duper player in our Discord. In fact, Duper takes social deception to a next level: There’s an embedded private chat you have with each other player in a game. This simple hidden information gives rise to teamwork, but also to bluffing, conspiracies, and backstabbing, all in a 40-minute game session. In short, Duper is a sibling of Poker’s, though with some important differences.
First, in a wagering game, you inevitably lose money occasionally, especially when you’re new to the game and learning the strategy. In Poker, you’d have to suffer through that and just hope you’ll get to the other side as a “pro player”. This creates a lot of churn, i.e. people who may enjoy Poker but don’t play because they lost money in their first real-money game. In Duper, we understand that everyone takes time to learn the game, and hence we will concentrate our rewards on players who don’t yet play super well. As an early Duper player, you don’t need to worry about early loss when you’re just learning the game.
Second, wagering games lend themselves well to existing communities, offline or online. The role of the superhost, who brings their friends to play and handholds them in the first few games, is as critical of a role in Duper as in Poker, D&D, Catan, Magic the Gathering, and many other “tabletop”-like games. However, Duper superhosts (or super Duper hosts, if you will) will be empowered like never before, with special incentives, privileges, and love from the team. If you’re a Duper player and wish to bring friends, we want to help you succeed with all the means we have, including all the money we’ve raised from VCs and grants and 24/7 access to the core team’s time and mindshare. More on this very soon.
Our goal for Duper is not to dethrone Poker. But we do believe that, in the 21st century, as awesome and immersive video games as a medium has gotten, there ought to be a great video game that is also a fun wagering game like Poker. A game which you can play casually with friends for a few dollars, or in a dazzling tournament with millions on the line. Join us.
