story time late last year when I lost my job, I started applying to different marketing/comms roles. I told my friends and network to keep an eye out for opportunities and share them with me. about a month later, I got a text from a friend saying he had a growth marketer opportunity. I was so eager, since it was gonna be my first senior marketing position. I sent a message to the hiring manager, who also happened to be the co-founder. I asked what the process was like and he replied, “what we usually do is ask people to explain to us how they will bring Redacted from a startup to a very well-known brand. which growth strategy will they put in place” I got excited and got to work, writing a killer strategy with a foolproof gtm. of course, not without analyzing the ones already put in place. I started with a product audit from a user perspective to give a taste of what I bring to the table. I spent 2 weeks working on the document and sent it over. the response was far from underwhelming: “wow, what you've done is really impressive and well done. we might stop the redacted for now, and focus mostly on the redacted” someone would think I got the job already, but no. some days later, I got a message that they found a better profile for the job. I was not even pissed. a couple of weeks later, the team executed some of the strategies I sent over, and I mean point-blank. but they failed. little did they know I had omitted some of the key pieces from the doc I sent over. I thought to myself, it turns out the "better profile" didn't come with the missing puzzle pieces. btw if you wanna check out the doc, send me a Dm.
