Jess Falcis over the ICC trial of former President Rodrigo Duterte, with both sides debating whether the Philippine justice system was capable of addressing allegations tied to the drug war. Speaking on #PolitikoTalks, Falcis argued that the issue centers on accountability for alleged crimes against humanity and questioned the willingness of law enforcement institutions to act, while Erice challenged the argument and raised concerns over the availability and credibility of evidence. Sarcasm Versus Empathy in the Senate In moments of crisis, the true character of leadership is revealed not in clever remarks but in the capacity for empathy. The Senate incident that shook the nation — marked by gunfire within its halls — was not merely a breach of security but a symbolic rupture of trust in one of our most sacred democratic institutions. When Senators Loren Legarda and Pia Cayetano broke down in tears, it was not weakness on display but conscience. Their grief was a moral protest against violence, arrogance, and the erosion of dignity in public service. Against this backdrop, Senator Ping Lacson’s sarcastic comment — “Wala man lang nangumusta sa amin!” — trivializes the gravity of the moment. By painting a picture of colleagues casually eating, drinking coffee, and going live on Facebook, he reduces the emotional breakdown of his peers to a spectacle, and worse, insinuates complicity by the minority bloc. Sarcasm, however sharp, cannot heal wounds nor restore trust. It only deepens division and distracts from the urgent need for unity. The tears of Legarda and Cayetano remind us that politics is not merely about power plays or rhetorical sparring. It is about conscience, integrity, and the courage to stand vulnerable when the institution itself is under siege. Their breakdown was a call to conscience — a reminder that leadership is not measured by bravado but by humility and empathy. In contrast, sarcasm in such a moment risks becoming a weapon of cynicism, dismissing genuine human pain as theatrics. What the Senate needs now is not mockery but moral clarity. Leaders must rise above petty jabs and embrace the higher calling of public service: to protect the dignity of the institution, to heal divisions, and to embody compassion in the face of turmoil. Tears, far from being a sign of weakness, are a testament to the humanity that binds us together. They are reminders that democracy is fragile, and that its guardians must be both strong in principle and tender in conscience. In the end, history will not remember who delivered the sharpest sarcasm in times of crisis. It will remember who stood with integrity, who wept for the nation, and who chose empathy over arrogance. The Senate must reclaim its moral center, for only then can it truly serve the people it represents. Dr. Tony Leachon

@DrTonyLeachon Well they mismanage the tax money anyway. Plus, the relief is needed for businesses also that deliver food and essential goods so it’ll keep prices of other important stuff softer. Instead of giving out ayuda and so much free stuff for the poor we need relief for all.

VAT Suspension on Fuel: Short-Term Relief, Long-Term Pain By Dr. Tony Leachon Background The proposal to suspend the value-added tax (VAT) on fuel has gained traction amid rising oil prices and public frustration over the cost of living. Advocates argue that removing VAT would immediately lower pump prices and ease the burden on motorists. However, Senate President Pro Tempore Ping Lacson has raised a crucial warning: while VAT suspension may offer temporary comfort, it carries serious long-term consequences for the economy. VAT is one of the government’s most stable revenue sources, funding essential services such as health care, education, and social protection. Reducing or suspending it would shrink fiscal space, weaken public programs, and potentially increase national debt. The Economic Impact Lacson’s statement—“Tayo rin ang tatamaan”—underscores the ripple effect of tax decisions. When VAT is suspended, the government loses billions in revenue. This loss affects the gross domestic product (GDP) and limits the state’s ability to invest in infrastructure, health systems, and social safety nets. Moreover, the distribution of benefits from VAT suspension is uneven. Wealthier households, who consume more fuel, gain the most from lower prices. Middle-class families may experience short-term relief, but the poor—who rely on public transport and consume less fuel—receive minimal benefit. In effect, VAT suspension becomes a regressive measure, favoring those who need help the least. The Better Alternative Instead of suspending VAT, the government should pursue targeted assistance and structural reforms that protect both the middle class and the poor: • Direct cash transfers to vulnerable families using existing registries such as 4Ps and Pantawid Pasada. • Fuel vouchers for transport workers and delivery riders most affected by price hikes. • Investment in renewable energy and mass transport to reduce long-term dependence on imported oil. • Fiscal discipline and transparency to ensure that tax revenues are used efficiently and equitably. These measures provide real relief without undermining the country’s fiscal health. Big Picture Thinking The VAT debate is not just about fuel—it’s about the kind of economy we want to build. A nation that prioritizes short-term comfort over long-term resilience risks repeating cycles of crisis and inequality. For the middle class, fiscal stability ensures continued access to education, health care, and employment. For the poor, targeted aid and efficient social programs offer protection against economic shocks. Conclusion Suspending VAT may feel like an easy fix, but it is a temporary solution with lasting damage. As Senator Lacson rightly warns, “In the long term, tayo rin ang tatamaan.” The government must resist populist shortcuts and instead strengthen direct aid, improve efficiency, and invest in sustainable solutions. Economic relief must be just, targeted, and sustainable—protecting both the middle class and the poor while preserving the nation’s fiscal integrity. @iampinglacson

@DrTonyLeachon Price cap is only good if the govt subsidizes the difference. Brent crude physical is at $141 per barrel so it’s really insane. Gov’t should suspend taxes also to help everyone. All the money that went to ghost projects could’ve just been used for subsidizing gas to everyone.

📌 Now or never: • Magpatupad ng price cap sa petroleum products. 🇵🇭 Mr. President, crack the whip. Tony Leachon #PresyoNgLangis #PriceCapNow #EVAT #FoodSecurity #EnergyCrisis Philippines

@WinGatchalian74 The oil business works the same way in other countries though, if you want lower rates for the consumer why can’t the government subsidize the cost then? Otherwise how will oil suppliers purchase new oil to replace sold stock if they are not going to sell at replacement cost?

FUEL PRICE HIKES: MARCOLETA WALKS OUT; MANIBELA DEMANDS REFUND WATCH: Sen. Rodante Marcoleta walks out of a Senate hearing on the Middle East crisis, saying he was unsatisfied with answers on the sudden fuel price hikes despite existing stocks being bought at lower prices. Transport group Manibela is now demanding a refund from oil firms, alleging overpricing. Oil companies, meanwhile, cite various factors behind the increases, including pricing based on replenishment cost to ensure they can purchase the next supply. | @eimorpsantos
