the difference is that these jobs used to be ubiquitous - a far larger proportion of society was required to contend with reality

dangerous jobs early in life used to be the norm. if you ask almost anyone over the age of 70 about their early 20s, they’ll tell you about the time they jumped out of planes as a paratrooper, spent months at sea as a merchant marine, or worked a summer on an oil rig. for most of human history, there was an implicit social contract: young men had testosterone and a desire for adventure, and society needed someone to do the dangerous things that kept the world running. we now live in a much safer world, which is good, and those same instincts are now otherwise channeled, but I think we’ve probably lost something in the quiet evaporation of that social contract
