I wrote about something I'm doing, but not very happily: voting for Kathy Hochul. I am far from alone -- her victory is likely to be delivered by voters like me. joshbarro.com/p/this-week-in…

@emilymbadger Might cut both ways though, at 6% you’d have thought the same thing but you could still save a lot by acting quickly… maybe still true

The rate of change itself must also have a real chilling effect. 'Cause if you're trying to buy a home right now, you have to keep telling yourself "Man, I could have bought this same home six months ago for $500 less a month." (or more...)

I know people like to point out that 7 percent mortgage rates are not *that* terrible historically. But there have been very few times in the last 50 years when they have risen this much, this quickly. nytimes.com/2022/10/27/bus…

@normative She suffered very serious trauma while reporting in Egypt per Wikipedia, obviously not a diagnosis but seems like the kind of thing that could explain it

Obviously I don’t know what’s going on with Logan. But she was at one point a serious and successful reporter who’s now spouting conspiracy theories so manifestly deranged that even Newsmax is embarrassed. I don’t think you need to be a psychologist to grok that something’s awry.

One weird consequence of our current politics is that a bunch of folks suffering midlife mental health crises end up becoming right-wing media stars instead of getting treatment.

Parents are stunned by a school board candidate’s comments in an Indiana town: “All Nazis weren't 'bad' as you specify. They did horrible things … Who is to say if we were both there in the same place and time, that we wouldn't have done the same thing” wthr.com/article/news/e…

@JackieJonez It has its own subway station! But it’s indeed the only place I’ve ever been to in Manhattan that feels like it’s a ten minute walk from anything else in Manhattan

Some people may have concerns about a giant casino in Times Square. But on the other hand, the developers say revenue from the casino will fund a fleet of surveillance drones and facial recognition cameras capable of comprehensive surveillance of the area nytimes.com/2022/10/19/nyr…

So, this specific event sounds… unappealing. But it’s not like closed/Chatham House sessions at academic gatherings are some unheard of novelty.

Academics have a 50% chance of being generally liberal in a NPRish way, 30% chance of being generally conservative in a NRO/WSJ reader type way, and a 20% chance of holding some insane, incredibly esoteric and vaguely violent ideology fully understood by maybe 50 people.

@willystaley I thought the point was exactly this, and the kids’ absorption in 1950s tv means they intuitively understand that things used to be better
