@Hepmepleez @brettachapman Actually most tribes were against accepting Blacks as tribal members but were forced to accept them by US government. Additionally, according to the book “and still the Waters run, Betrayal of the 5 civilized Tribes, many Blacks were just squatters on tribal land at the time.

This is cool. The Cherokee Nation is the only one of the five Indigenous nations that tolerated slavery to fully recognize and enroll the descendants of their freed Black slaves as citizens—availing yourself of that would be a great way to honor your family’s legacy and heritage!

A year ago, I wrote an article not realizing it could be about my own ancestors. After digging into my granny’s ancestry, I’ve discovered my great-great-grandmother Cynthia Gibson (later Cynthia Thomas) was a @CherokeeNation Freedman on the Dawes Roll. 🧵 theblackwallsttimes.com/2023/08/08/the…

@Hepmepleez @brettachapman But there's no question that it was increasingly contentious, and was part of what was effectively our own civil war concurrent with the US civil war. It's just a shame on us that we took until the 2020s to recognize our Freedmen kin as kin in full.

@Hepmepleez @brettachapman The term he used was "tolerated" which is actually very apt. As a nation (the CN in IT) we didn't prohibit slavery and we made it an article of Tribal law ca 1839 and 1863, the latter with a treaty with the Confederacy explicitly stating so in exchange for promised sovereignty.

Twelve years ago, the soul of Newtown, the soul of Connecticut, and the soul of the nation were pierced forever when 26 lives were stolen at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We owe a debt of gratitude to the courageous survivors, families, first responders, and Connecticut officials who turned their deep grief into action. Their years of advocacy made the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act possible.

@caliescali444 One was targeted individually while the other said it to everyone. To say there isn’t a difference between the two situations is disingenuous.

@CherokeeNation @ChuckHoskin_Jr I'm glad to see this, especially given that it's a requirement of the Constitution itself and it's been several years absent. It's such an important document for us to have in our own language.

@bloodylikeabody @TsMadisonatl1 English is the native language. I couldn’t take millions of Black Americans to another country and then tell the local population that we were there to suppress wages and that they needed to speak our language if they wanted jobs in a system they built.
