The debate over the SAVE America Act comes down to one simple question: Should American elections be reserved for American citizens only? A new piece from the MacIver Institute buff.ly/y1KA1TN lays out what millions of Americans already believe: requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote is not “extreme.” It’s common sense. Right now, federal voter registration relies heavily on self-attestation — checking a box and signing a form. The SAVE America Act would close that loophole by requiring documentary proof of citizenship for federal voter registration. As the article points out: every illegal vote cancels out the voice of a legal voter. That shouldn’t be controversial. Americans already show ID to board a plane, open a bank account, or access government services. Protecting the integrity of federal elections should meet at least that same standard. Election confidence doesn’t come from slogans. It comes from systems people can trust. The Senate should stop stalling and bring the SAVE America Act to the floor.

Leader Thune says there's nothing more he can do to pass the Save America Act: "We don't have the votes to get rid of the filibuster. We had a very spirited debate. I made more speeches on the floor in support of the SAVE Act than any other senator."

Per The New York Times, there are discussions among congressional Democrats about still trying to implement a new congressional map in Virginia despite the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling. That process could include lowering the retirement age of Supreme Court justices and trying to invalidate the constitutional amendment that created Virginia’s bipartisan redistricting commission. nytimes.com/2026/05/10/us/…
