@NYPDPC @NYPDnews Thank you Commissioner Tisch. We are again very grateful for the brave actions of our NYPD officers & appalled by the attack at yesterday’s protest. No one should rationalize or minimize the use of such barbarous weapons. It was a terror attack meant to inflict maiming & death.

The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb. It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death. Further analysis will be conducted, including on a second device. Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested on scene yesterday and are in custody in connection with this matter. The NYPD is working on this investigation with our partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the FBI through our Joint Terrorism Task Force. I want to again thank the brave members of the NYPD who ran towards the danger without hesitation and quickly apprehended the suspects.

We laud the bravery shown by our 19th Precinct officers and the other NYPD officers who put themselves in harms way. Thank you to these officers and to the men and women of the NYPD who risk their lives to protect us and everyone in our city.
Jessica S. Tisch@NYPDPC

I always speak about the police running towards danger when everyone else runs away — that happened today. Officers ran towards a man carrying an ignited suspicious device. They put the safety of others above their own. Today, as always, I thank them for their noble service.

Today marks the 139th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of 19th Precinct Roundsman (Sergeant) Robert Montgomery. On January 11, 1887, he succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained three days earlier. On this day, and always, his sacrifice will never be forgotten.#FidelisAdMortem

Every day, the men and women of the NYPD put their lives on the line to protect New Yorkers. Last night was no different. Officers were engaged in two police-involved shootings, and there is every indication that their actions were nothing short of heroic. In one incident, officers saved patients, doctors, nurses, and security guards at a hospital from an emotionally disturbed man armed with a weapon who was threatening to kill them. Make no mistake about it: the people trapped in the room with the armed and violent subject were in imminent danger.   In another incident, only a few hours later, officers were confronted by a man stepping out of a vehicle pointing, at close range, what appeared to be a gun, and only later was determined to be a Sig Sauer air pistol. They acted to save their own lives and the lives of civilians, as they should.   In these tragic cases, as with every police-involved shooting, the NYPD will conduct an exhaustive investigation and review. I am eternally grateful today and every day for the noble men and women of the New York City Police Department.
