As the journalist who broke this story in May 2025, I can tell you that state authorities did not take Chris Bernardini’s allegations seriously, as you claim. It was a full five months before they would suspend payments to Gateway Community Services, but Bernardini had complained privately as a whistleblower to the State Auditor Matt Dunlap and Biden’s DHS a full year before he went public only to be ignored. When he went public, Janet Mills’ Maine Revenue Services audited *his* taxes before cracking down on Gateway and Abdullahi Ali. Gateway was also audited three separate times under Mills, each audit found overbilling for a total of $1.6 in “improper payments” and Mills never cut off the money until public pressure mounted. Gateway has paid back less than $120k of what they improperly billed. In fact, Mills continued to give no-bid contracts to Gateway even amid the audits because they helped her win re-election in 2022, and just last year AG Aaron Frey gave them a $400k opioid settlement grant. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has partnered with their political arm, the Community Organizing Alliance, as part of her gov campaign.
