Incredible post. I had no idea the industrial policy that helped spawn the world's biggest semiconductor manufacturer traces directly back to the New Deal's Tennessee Valley Authority.

Neat profile of Taiwan's "Industrial Technology Research Institute", a government-funded lab which helped spin out TSMC and much of Taiwan's chip industry. One of the most impressive industrial policy plays of all time. asteriskmag.com/issues/13/the-…

Trump is just the trigger. There are deep historical forces: The dismantling of the FCC fairness doctrine by Reagan, the resulting emergence of Fox News, conservative talk radio, and other propaganda outlets, the removal of guardrails for the influence of money in politics (e.g. Citizen United), the continuous reduction of taxes on high incomes, the ever-increasing wealth and income inequalities enabled by the above, the stagnation of working class income despite continued increase in productivity (and corporate profits), the total lack of social protection and benefits compared to other developed countries. People in the middle class and below have been screwed for 40 years and are angry. They should be angry at Republicans. But the Republican party has managed to deflect their anger towards immigrants, non-Christians, non-whites, liberals, LGBT, China, academia, intellectual "elites", scientists, journalists, and non-existent scarecrows like Antifa.

Power is being restored in many parts of San Francisco, but PG&E says about 40,000 customers may remain without electricity overnight. If you are still without power: • Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk • Check on neighbors, especially seniors and people with medical needs • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible • If using space heaters, keep them at least 3 feet from anything flammable Call 911 only for life-threatening emergencies. For outage updates and restoration times, continue to check PG&E’s website: pgealerts.alerts.pge.com/outage-tools/o… For power outage safety tips: sf.gov/power-outages

I used them all this year! I want to give Gemini 3 Pro and ChatGPT 5.2 a try... but Opus 4.5 has been so good so far that I haven't yet felt the need to switch.

I honestly do not understand why there is an api for apps to access your contacts at all, and why modern iOS doesn’t just unconditionally deny apps that call -[CNContactStore requestAccess].
@mikko@mikko

How are apps still doing this? Companies: stop asking users to upload their address books. And everyone else: refuse to upload your address book to random apps and social media platforms. The contacts in your phone are not your data. It’s other people’s data.

@atrembath As an advocate I have always understood that expression as rhetorical and hinting to the fact that impact doesn’t grow linearly with global surface temperature.

"Some advocates use a slogan — 'every tenth of a degree matters.' However, there is no research (that I am aware of) that purports to quantify climate impacts as a function of tenths of a degree of global average temperatures."

@cremieuxrecueil @MrBidouille What do you mean? If you end up using less energy to produce the municipal heat, then you’re good? Then it’s a cost/benefit analysis. Also it may not just be a question of energy: if that allows you to avoid burning gas, then CO2eq emissions could be interesting to look at.

@cremieuxrecueil @MrBidouille *not only, fixed that for you, I don’t have the “energy balance sheet” of it all, I’m gonna reasonably assume that the waste heat contributes positively.
