Huge thanks to @StakingRewards for inviting RT21’s @Ithiel out to #Bangkok to talk about #Bittensor and our $TAO Bunker #Validator
Staking Rewards@StakingRewards

How can we make AI as decentralized as possible? You could build an underground apocalypse proof bunker to run a @bittensor_ validator on independent infra. That's exactly what Adam from @21RoundTable has done. Don't believe us? Watch his full keynote at this year's Staking Summit...

I agree with @FrankRizz07 here. If we as an ecosystem strive to hold ourselves to a higher standard than traditional models of centralized government, we should not push through multiple critical changes in "Omnibus packages" without the ability for nuanced discussion. There are many pieces to this proposal that make sense. - Giving 25% of lock cost to owners as dTAO is useful - Adding initial liquidity to the pool is useful But auto CHK to subnet owner keys is destructive, misaligned and could potentially incentivize corruption. With the amount of CHK validators on the network, this will de facto lead to centralized validation, closed source subnets and increases the risk that alpha tokens could be deem securities. Subnet owners will become the permanent single validator on new subnets - controlling consensus, undermining the required “checks and balances”, and incentivizing self dealing (putting their thumb on the scale for miner scoring) We at @generaltensor will vote NO to this proposal solely because we believe there are nuanced conversations to be had about each proposal, and they should not be pushed through in an Omnibus package. #Bittensor $TAO
Frank Rizzo@FrankRizz07

For those of you #Bittensor community members who are unaware, there is a BIG VOTE about to go down with the Top 12 Validators. I view it like a Gov Bill packed with multiple (and significant) changes for the protocol. -sn registration becoming stake -giving 25% lock cost to owners -auto-chk to sn validator -etc My thoughts: This has some positive/needed changes. That said, I will be voting a HARD 'NO'. IMO the auto-chk proposal removes decentralized validation from Bittenser and opens the door to a plethora of new problems in the ecosystem. The challenges they are trying to solve with this can be accomplished in much better ways. If passed, I believe this will incentivize malicious subnet owner activity. It will remove the required 'checks and balances' that make decentralized infrastructure the power that it has become. Let's not take two steps back.. I encourage the other 11 validators to register and vote NO by my side. (btw, if they don't register, it's an automatic YES vote for them 🧐) Let's not rush this, but instead, put our heads together to come up with a much better solution. Validator Stakers: I encourage you to pick up the phone and call your Senator (send a message to your validator owner 🤪). Give them your thoughts. Encourage them to pause and assess. I appreciate everyone's attention to this matter. @CrucibleLabs @21RoundTable @opentensor @taostats @generaltensor @TAO_dot_com @daofive @krakenfx @YumaGroup @taodotbot $TAO

On the @theallinpod this week, @chamath asked @nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about decentralized AI training, calling our Covenant-72B run "a pretty crazy technical accomplishment." One correction: it's 72 billion parameters, not four. Trained permissionlessly across 70+ contributors on commodity internet. The largest model ever pre-trained on fully decentralized infrastructure. Jensen's answer is worth hearing too.

@aakashgupta A quarter million is still a lot cheaper than $500mil - regardless of whether you're buying or renting it. Either way, it's a big step forward.

A quarter million dollars in GPUs is the entry ticket to “democratized” AI training. Each participant needed a minimum of 8x NVIDIA B200 GPUs. “Anyone with GPUs could join” is technically true the same way “anyone can buy a Gulfstream” is technically true. Twenty-plus contributors scattered across the globe just finished training a 72 billion parameter model on 1.1 trillion tokens, coordinated over commodity internet, with no central cluster and no whitelist. The engineering is legitimately impressive. They compressed gradient communication by 146x using SparseLoCo, let participants join and leave mid-run without killing the training process, and used a blockchain incentive layer (Bittensor subnet 3) to pay contributors in TAO tokens for staying honest and keeping machines running. Six months ago the largest permissionless decentralized run was INTELLECT-1 at 10B parameters. Covenant jumped to 72B. That’s a 7x parameter leap while removing the trust assumption entirely. Now the context that matters. GPT-4 trained on roughly 25,000 A100s in a dedicated cluster estimated at $500 million in infrastructure. OpenAI’s total compute bill hit $5 billion in 2024. The industry is racing toward $100 billion clusters by 2028. Covenant-72B benchmarks “competitively with centralized models at similar scale,” which means competitive with LLaMA-2-70B, a model Meta released in July 2023 using a conventional data center. The 72B number sounds massive until you remember frontier models are now in the trillions of parameters, trained on 10-15x more tokens, with post-training pipelines that cost as much as the pre-training itself. What Covenant proved: distributed training over the open internet works at a scale that would have been unthinkable two years ago. The optimizer is brilliant. The infrastructure leap is real. And “permissionless” still costs a quarter million dollars at the door.
templar@tplr_ai

We just completed the largest decentralised LLM pre-training run in history: Covenant-72B. Permissionless, on Bittensor subnet 3. 72B parameters. ~1.1T tokens. Commodity internet. No centralized cluster. No whitelist. Anyone with GPUs could join or leave freely. 1/n
