@DrCameronMurray What it does allow for though is political moderation, because the major parties don't have to worry about losing votes to the more radical part of their respective wing because the preferences will flow back to them, again this is what usually happens.

@DrCameronMurray Kind of a bit of both, preferential voting allows for people to vote for minor parties without wasting their votes, but because the major parties are in the centre most preferences flow towards them anyway, at least usually.

Preferential voting is one of the few things in the Australian electoral system that helps minor parties.
I have no idea why people keep claiming the opposite like this.
