@HowardMarkLouis @NosuSuishinV2 This is from F91, set in UC123, 30 years after CCA Even in the show, the EFSF has more modern MS like the Heavygun and G-Cannon (UC109/115) and ships like the Clop + RaCailum-class (UC93), but they are few and far between to contrast the majority of modernized Jegans and Salamis

@34mmComposite @NosuSuishinV2 Ah. I'm pretty familiar with the UC up to Char's Counterattack but haven't watched much beyond that. What series is this screenshot from?

@HowardMarkLouis @NosuSuishinV2 Yes, the EXACT point the show is getting at is "Federation forces are understaffed and underfunded by UC123 so 80% of them are still using obsolete equipments" and not " equipments can be kept in service for decades via MLU" as twitter is trying to spin it.

@34mmComposite @NosuSuishinV2 Perhaps the constraints are budgetary? The Federation has to maintain fleets, garrisons, etc... across just about everywhere people live in the UC. It wouldn't seem too unreasonable for some areas considered backwaters to get stuck with a Salamis Kai and a few GM IIIs.

@34mmComposite @NosuSuishinV2 The uss Nimitz is 50 years old and the navy is delaying its decommissioning for another year or two. The second and third oldest Nimitz carriers are 48 and 44 years old respectively so it’s very plausible that a mainline ship can be operated that long.

@kmchang83 @NosuSuishinV2 The equivalent to this would really be USN still using Fletchers with a slapped-on Terrier and somehow it's still 80% of the navy by 2026.

@kmchang83 @NosuSuishinV2 The difference is Spruances aren't WW2 gunboat DD designs hastily modified to become DDGs, they also don't make up the majority of the USN by the end of their 30years service. Meanwhile Salamis Kai is a UC70 design modified and served well into the UC150s as the MAIN ESFS ship.

@Yokogo_ @NosuSuishinV2 By the same logic, the US should still be using WW2 escort carriers instead of building new nuclear super carriers because they both exist to "taxi fighter aircrafts around", you see the problem I'm getting at?

@34mmComposite @NosuSuishinV2 Well when your ships are mostly floating boxes with engines, sensors and guns to taxi mobile suits around you wouldn't spend as much on them.

@AngryTrapMidget @NosuSuishinV2 MS carrying capability is still an aspect that needs to be advanced? Equating the Salamais Kai's 4 MS + 1 capapult to what later UC ships are capable of is like equating a WW2 escort carrier to the Ford just because they're both capable of "launching military aircraft".

@34mmComposite @NosuSuishinV2 Funnily, USS Midway did fight in the gulf and it was laid down at the same time as the last few Fletchers. Sure it was a carrier, but at that point in UC ships mostly existed to carry MS into combat and explode dramatically as well.

@kmchang83 @NosuSuishinV2 Read again, Iowas were not the MAIN ships during Gulf. They're a nice to have and cheaper alternatives when it comes to land attack vs TLAMs, but they're not the ones doing the heavy lifting. Imagine the USN being like 70% WW2 ships during 1990s, that's what's happening here.

MS Era 0099, is my favorite worldbuilding book. The amount of thematic layers relevant to Gundam is remarkable. & Both 0079 and 0080 had to exist first, and the history of WW2 before those stories too.

Thinking about Zeon's captured Federation mobile suits... being repainted and deployed. The wooden signs, physical map and land ship compound the narrative as background elements... It's 'real'-listic.
