I haven’t see the movie, but its interesting how the imagination of modern Western audiences has been so thoroughly shaped by the Christian ethic that it is difficult to make a story based on a worldview/ethic so foreign actually compelling. We are actually scandalized by pre-Christian moral cosmology. @holland_tom Dominion did a great job elucidating this. It makes sense that the stories are baptized or made more morally legible. I feel like we do that with ancient civilizations in Asia as well (thinks Genghis Khan, Samurai warriors, etc). We really like our stories to have romantic love and self sacrifice. What the ancient world treated as heroic, we find horrifying.
