🚨 BREAKING: Tucker asked, "Was Iran about to get a nuke?" Joe Kent replied: "No. They've had a religious ruling against it since 2004. We had no intelligence that it was being disobeyed."

You win by winning. You do not win by losing? If Trump-Vance lose, the eGOP is going to blame Trump's anti-immigration stance and they are going to work with the left to destroy everyone to the right of Romney and ensure the GOP never become more than the loyal opposition.

@z500_tj @citrinowicz They won't be able to do so. As long as they don't have nukes, it is impossible for a country, especially one with a severely degraded army, internal instability, no air defenses, to extort the entire world. This will result in a coalition to occupy southern Iran. Not realistic.

The administration now faces a stark choice—one it can no longer avoid. A. Use force to reopen the strait, knowing full well that any strike on Iran’s energy infrastructure will trigger retaliation. This is not a limited operation. It’s escalation—potentially rapid, and potentially uncontrollable. There are no half-measures here: if Washington wants the strait open, it will have to fight for it. B. Accept reality, cut losses, and pursue a deal with Tehran over the terms of access. Politically unpalatable? Absolutely. But when global oil flows and the stability of Asian markets are at stake, strategic necessity tends to override rhetoric. What last night made unmistakably clear is this: there is no clean solution. No surgical fix. No easy win. The longer the administration pretends otherwise, the higher the cost will be #IranWar
Javier Blas@JavierBlas

The US and its allies are making a concerted effort to de-escalate the oil/gas war, having witnessed that Iran was willing -- and able -- to climb the escalation ladder very quickly. To be seen whether Tehran plays ball. Whatever the case, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

@HorEmperor @joelpollak Precisely the same kind of high-quality intellectual analysis. Thanks for your reasoned and cogent arguments. I shall deeply consider the many important points you have raised.

@joelpollak Notice how Peterson's reply doesn't actually answer the question? He changes the topic to his own views and his attempt to push an "it's going out of control" narrative.

@L0m3z Can I play? Trumpism is about deportations or nothing. Deportations are the silver bullet for everything from democracy deficits to fraud and crime. More deportations!!

I like Caldwell a great deal and think he is very smart and worth paying attention to when he writes something like this. I also agree with many of his concerns about Iran and its potential to spiral into a much deeper crisis, but I think he is making exactly the same mistake here that almost everyone makes once they announce they no longer support Trump. Like the libertarians or economic populists or culture warriors or whoever finds themselves on the other side of some decision Trump has made that they really don't like, Caldwell is redefining Trumpism to account for his own personal preferences for what he *wants* Trumpism to be, rather than what it is. In this case, Caldwell claims that Trumpism is about "democratic restoration." He ends the essay by saying that, "Trumpism is about democracy or it is about nothing." There is something to this, of course. Trumpism is to a large degree the assertion of popular will over the narrow-minded and often badly distorted preferences of the "deep state" or the "experts" or "decadent elites," etc. It is inclusive of the restoration of a truly democratic spirit as Caldwell defines it. But no, this is not the totality of it and misses the big point that Trump and Trumpism is not anyone's ideological program or theory of governance or anything like that, but rather, for better or worse, the express will and instincts of a single man.

We’ve just put our latest issue to bed. Christopher Caldwell has written the cover. He argues that the Iran war will likely mark the end of Trumpism:

"We were kidding around at the All-Star Game, putting on a show. Joe Morgan hit a couple into the seats, Steve Garvey hit a couple into the bullpen. Then Greg Luzinski stepped up and made it look like he was driving golf balls. Everything he hit went out of sight. Just awesome." Johnny Bench. "Luzinski was a doorway and a half. They could hold the Winter Olympics on his shoulders, balance Rhode Island on his knees and plug up leaky dams with his feet." Rich Wescott. "They’re going to have to start a separate record book: ‘Most home run, roof.’" Ron Kittle. During the 1983 season as a designated hitter with the White Sox, “The Bull” became the first hitter in the then 73-year history of Comiskey Park to hit three home runs onto or over the outfield roof. "The only way you can do that is by breaking into the equipment room." Pete Rose on Greg Luzinski's claim that Luzinski would steal 20 bases in a season. Greg Luzinski was one of the first players to annually purchase $20,000 in tickets for underprivileged children. Both in Philadelphia and Chicago, the “Bull Ring” was a popular area for children to watch their favorite team as Greg Luzinski’s guests.

If the Iranians have already begun to mine the strait south of Larak Island and are now forcing traffic through the even smaller ~5mi strait between Larak and Qeshm Island, I don't see how that's not checkmate. It's impossible to imagine a scenario where they can't maintain fire control over such a narrow passage with drones.

Three tankers have transited the Strait of Hormuz in the past several hours, each navigating deep INTO Iranian waters sailing around the north side of Larak island, Iran well outside of the standard channel. This likely indicates some level of coordination with Iran for safe passage. It may also indicate that some hazard exists within the usual shipping channel. h/t: @TankerTrackers @_MartinKelly_

I keep seeing the claim that Israel did not want Bush to attack Iraq, including by @michelleinbklyn in the @nytimes today and elsewhere. The claim is entirely fraudulent and easily debunked with even a cursory examination of the evidence. Every serious student of the catastrophe knows that Israel and the lobby were champions of the war. See the original paper by @MearsheimerJ and @stephenWalt that documents this at length. hks.harvard.edu/publications/i…

@policytensor @barnes_law @michelleinbklyn @nytimes You cite the two most famous Jew-haters in academia as your source and screenshot their evidence which is *out of power former Israeli officials*. It is well documented that the actual Israeli government at the time didn't want the Iraq war and urged the U.S. government not to.

@marklevinshow He will not show up to talk to you. A few clips of him and it’s clear he’s not being honest. When he just resigned from a high ranking position, and his first stop is Tucker Carlson, where he repeats his talking points, chances are he isn’t all that he’s cracked up to be.
