@SandyofCthulhu I was under the impression that it was an approximation of a guttural sound that itself approximated the only way for humans to speak the name of the entity.

Probably the single most-asked question I get in interviews is "How do you pronounce Cthulhu?" So here is the full and complete answer. Cthulhu does not have a vocal language. He is a telepath, and communicates in images, not words. He created the term "Cthulhu" for humans, and also made it impossible to pronounce, as a completely alien term. HENCE any way YOU pronounce it is just fine, because it is outside any human's power to say. Lovecraft once wrote that "Cthulhu" is a single syllable, which seems insane - maybe you need two voiceboxes? Also, as an exercise for you to figure out, what purpose might Cthulhu have had in making his name so impossible?

@BenjaminDEKR I had no problem understanding the “gaps” in the translation scene. They show that he is making connections with similar concepts and putting “words” to them. Signs and signifiers. It stands to reason that he could slowly build a lexicon from there.

A big problem with Project Hail Mary: the science and engineering is so dumbed-down that it's borderline comical. Problems get solved almost magically, with no process or iteration. He meets alien life, shows it a clock, and five minutes later is having conversations. (His laptop magically translated the language, I guess.) Grace is charming (unbelievably so) but isn't shown as a good scientist. He's shown as a fantastically-lucky scientist. The Big Bang Theory had a similar problem, pretending to be a show for smart, techy people but mostly just winking at it. In other words it's pop science when the world desperately needs hard engineering to be celebrated. Still a good movie, but not nearly the classic it could and should have been.

@SandyofCthulhu This person’s argument is wrong, though. Most youth team sports don’t supply everything. In baseball, kids usually have to bring their own bats and gloves and cleats. You may have some team bats, but you can also go buy your own more expensive one.

The purpose of Quidditch is not to create an actually playable game. It is to set up Harry to be important, and endanger him, and in that regard it succeeds admirably. But anyone who cares about team sports can trivially name a dozen ways in which Quidditch would fail.
Everything Price Sufferer (but especially eggs)@agraybee

I don't think JK Rowling really understands sports as a concept because what do you mean individual players can bring their own vastly superior equipment that gives them an advantage.

@agraybee In youth league baseball, you’ve got kids out there with vastly different quality bats and gloves and cleats. In a lot of youth basketball and football teams, you’ve got to supply your own shoes. Maybe even shorts. It’s not unheard of.

@42cobras I don’t know that. I just think it’s natural to have a chip when you’re in the same town as a school and they don’t offer you. Especially after he broke Lawerence’s state yardage record. Probably felt overlooked, but UGA had two QB commits go to Elite 11 in that class

@GrahamCoffeyDC Intriguing. Do we know if he holds a grudge or did he just never really want to come to Georgia? It sounds like he didn’t want UGA, but what do I know?

Yes. Offers to QB’s usually go out before any others because QB dominoes fall quickly. That’s often done when they’re freshmen and sophomores in high school. Georgia got a commitment from Puglisi in October 2022 after going hard after him in spring of 2022. Raiola was a silent commit by the week of the 2022 national title game vs TCU. Philo was in the same class as Puglisi and Raiola, and was done with his junior season by the time Buster left. He was as responsible for Georgia not recruiting Philo as anyone else.

Fear of abandonment linked to childhood trauma can present itself later in life, even when in a stable situation. Victims can become difficult to be around and generally unruly. As we continue to explore Charizard’s reticence towards Ash’s commands, let us recall that…

I’m reading a book of Roman history and it talks about an omen of a time when the Emperor Galba was making a sacrifice and his laurel crown fell down and the “sacred chickens” flew away. But there’s a footnote! The footnote said simply, “Not a good sign.”

In a freak accident at Tucson Electric Park, Arizona, during the 7th inning of a spring training game against the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson throws a pitch that hits and destroys a dove midair, in an explosion of feathers. The incident is widely videotaped and distributed.
