People often don’t realize that you can’t talk to Asians the same way you talk to Europeans or Westerners. There’s a cultural expectation that historical context, respect, and subtlety are treated differently what might seem casual or humorous in the West is deeply offensive in Japan, In Japan, context, respect, and subtlety guide almost every interaction. Unlike in many Western countries, where directness is valued, Japanese communication often relies on reading between the lines.

Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi's reaction as Trump says "Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Habour?" Undoubtedly the worst American diplomatic gaffe in post-war US-Japan history.

@alexis_nev11587 @aruvinchan @galenginho I thought he was trying to call out other people being racist, but then straight up did the dirty on Bangladeshis, after all the great food they've given the earth. Ungrateful git.

Race dynamics are so interesting in Spain. I met a Mexican-American last week. He told me he's going to leave Spain once he gets his Spanish passport. I asked why, He said, "Because Spanish people are racist pricks." He looks Latino, he acts Latino, he IS Latino. But he was also born and raised in Texas, speaks fluent English, and also has a lucrative remote job. So when Spanish people discover those other things about him, they short-circuit a little bit. Like you can see the sheer confusion and cognitive dissonance on their faces: "Wait, I want to look down on him like how I look down on all the other Latinos in Spain, but he has literally 3 things in which he's superior to me. I don't know how to react now." Because Spanish people have that stereotype that Latinos are all lazy, impoverished freeloaders who are trying to steal Spanish jobs and replace the local population. But when he revealed the other things about himself, Spanish people don't know how to react anymore. It's like if you and I met a Bangladeshi billionaire Chad. It just wouldn't compute.

I don’t get why Japanese speakers struggle so much with word-final consonants. It’s literally the same sounds they pronounce at the beginning and in the middle of words. It’s not like they pronounce アイス “aiu”, like how they say “aisu” for “ice”
Kuuhaku@Kuuhaku3993

I don't get why English speakers struggle so much with the "tsu" sound. It's literally the same as in the word "sports". It's not like they pronounce it "spors" like how they say "soonami"

@Visegrad12 @KostyonkiLady @redhead_ophelia It's very easy to refer to specific countries in Europe, too. Just say the country. And there are six countries in Europe with greater populations than Canada, regardless of its geographical size.

@KostyonkiLady @redhead_ophelia North America has like three huge countries instead of dozens, so it’s easier to refer to specific countries. It has nothing to do with anyone thinking Europe is a country. Dumb “arguments” and “engagement” like this is exactly why vague posting exists. Congratulations.

@buzzcutluvr @PanderShirts Seems like an accidental or incidental joke, given JLD just says the word that way naturally. I guess it's a quirk of geography how Americans see it as posh to say French foods properly, but dumb to say Spanish/Mexican words wrong.

@ItsAndyRyan @PanderShirts i think both are true! the fact that she's describing something very vulgar (using croissant as a dildo) contrasts her pronouncing it with a proper french accent, something an average american viewer would consider posh

its cause everyone over here is taught to pronounce it soonami, if you pronounce it like "tsu" people are gonna look at you like you're super performative and crazy. its like saying croissant in a french accent, you look like a douche

@buzzcutluvr @PanderShirts I argued with someone here who said Veep having her say croissant the French way is a joke about her character. I said it's more likely just because her dad was French and half the creators and writers on the show were Brits.

@PanderShirts @RonyBzh Americans don't tend to pronounce the ts in 'bottle of water', so this isn’t a great gotcha. Boddle of wadda. Better to point out Brits do badly on any South American food names, and saying words like "chorizo" correctly is seen as affected.

This is wild. People in *every single one* of the top US allies now think it's better to depend on China than the US. The global balance of power is clearly tilting away from the US and toward China.
