As an aside, I believe those with a touch less of the zealotry & obsession I had fare better. These jobs are hard to get, high status, and your life revolves around a very noble yet incredibly grave task. It's easy to lose perspective. It's an amazing job, but it's still a job.

Yup, all types. I knew in 9th grade I wanted to be SEAL and then read literally every special ops book at the library, and there were others like me 🤓. I have a friend who thought he signed up for "survival training" and was surprised to find ~0 survival training, but lots of yelling and cold water. (Not a nerd, he's a mixture of T.E. Lawrence and Hunter S. Thompson) Another friend joined the Navy to be a diver because his friend was. He was an All-american swimmer so they suggested he try out for SEALs and he said "sure, why not." And when I joined in the Mid-2000s, there were still patriotic New Yorkers that were deeply affected by 9/11 and wanted to take the fight to the enemy. All types.

I was at freshman orientation at the University of Vermont. Walking by the ROTC building, and not wanting my aunt and uncle to pay for all of my school, I decided to walk inside. It was summer, so only one person was there- a Green Beret Major that had a Masters in Philosophy from Harvard. We made a deal- I would try it for a couple of months and if I liked it they would pay for the rest of my school and refund my first semester. ROTC at a very liberal school was interesting- add that I was studying forestry and environmental sciences... I really had no other burning desire other than to just "try it out." Made the same decision with flight school- seemed cool to "try it out." And then the same with the 160th- "just try it out." For me, "the calling" grew over time and I found myself not only wanting to serve my country- but really wanting to serve the guys around me.

Sometimes I think about the guy in the unicorn suit. Where is he now? What is he doing with his life? Does he have a family? Does his wife know? Do his kids know? Does he still have the suit or did he sell it? Was selling it harder than he expected? Did he cry a little? Did he buy it back? I want a 6-part Netflix documentary. I need to hear his origin story. I need to know what he was thinking in the exact moment before he put it on. I need a therapist on camera explaining what it means. I need his third grade teacher saying "honestly, looking back, the signs were there."

Waiting for the 160th to do the thing. Always an exciting demo, and much more real than the loudest jet I’ve ever heard on the human jet pack thing.

@benmoores2 @TheLundyProject I was last there 20 years ago. Sadly no photos. Castle Williams on Governor’s Island in NY Harbor is an amazing place to wander around. Sadly, I don’t think it’s open to the public. So no photos from me…

7/Nakhal Fort, Oman: I've been to nearly all of Oman's forts. Bahla is UNESCO. Al Mirani is grand. Nakhal wins, — perfect for enthusiastic exploration, just grab an old musket and man the walls. Go for a swim after in the wadi outside in a picture book setting.

@bigseb31213 @benmoores2 Rumeli Hisar and the one across the strait are both excellent. I heard they renovated Rumeli Hisar since I was hanging out there drinking beer as a college student though.

@benmoores2 The impregnable fortress of Rhodes of course! Suleiman the Magnificent found it so hard to conquer that the knights hospitalier were allowed to safely move to Malta. I was scrolling your list waiting for it to appear near the top!

It is amazing how little the press is willing to dissect US decline under Trump. The US got no help with Iran, was scolded on Taiwan, says it got a small Boeing deal (China has not confirmed) and Trump appeased on Chinese students, microchips, etc. Xi even insulted US power. And yet it is being reported as a modest successful event. It was a strategic failure by the US and marks a notable moment in US decline.
