You can't treat the WNBA like a rational actor. They're not operating off of business principles. You don't increase pay by 450% or whatever when you're operating in the red. In the books this scene made way more sense. Bronn was bigger and 15 years younger and still wears a helmet, mail and leather armor, whilst Lysa hands Vardis a longsword even though he was planning on fighting with one hand, which Catelyn notes he's uncomfortable with. Sir Vardis is ultimately pinned down by a statue that Bronn topples over him. In the show, Bronn doesn't do anything wrong per se (I like that he goes for the gaps) but Vardis is just cartoonishly slow and overswings like a maniac for no reason. A poor depiction of what a trained man should be capable of in full plate.
