Dude it’s okay to say “I was wrong, I didn’t realize revenue and profit were not the same thing and I hope the WNBA continues to increase in popularity and succeed long term.” Per the WNBPA, WNBA was operating at a loss in 2020. The NBA and the WNBA’s owners spent their own money to pay players more as an investment into the future, not because the league was making profit at the time.

Brotherman. Nobody here is hating on the WNBA. Jonah asked how they could afford multiplying their costs by as much as they did to raise salaries. You implied they’ve always had the money to do so and just underpaid them. That’s wrong. They’ve had negative money left over every year until this year. They got a lot more money this year with new endorsement and tv deals because investors believe Caitlin Clark and other stars will be able to increase viewership numbers. Those are all facts, nothing to do with hating on the WNBA lol. They’re competing with their new competitor (Project B) and had to raise salaries to keep their talent.

All models are based off of the assumption of long term profit lol. They don’t have enough to raise salaries 6x, they had no other choice. Pressure from Project B, Unrivaled, and other competitors forced the WNBA to raise salaries or risk losing their stars and collapsing. The league is hanging on by a thread, similar to the UFL and other upstart professional leagues. A business can’t just survive forever with no viable route to profit. The NBA has kept them alive via subsidy (they pay the losses each year), but they won’t do it forever if profitability isn’t possible. Right now the bigger threat would be a new league with better entertainment factor putting the WNBA out of business.

That's why they had 2 strikes and a lockout. Today, no matter how you slice it, the WNBA is making big money. Enough to raise salaries 6x & Rev share 20%

I do believe the WNBA achieved a net profit last season for the first time in their history (thanks to front-heavy marketing/endorsement deals), the figure just hadn’t been released and I don’t think it’d be higher than the $50M deficit the prior year. The truth of it is that the league does not have the participation level to be profitable at the current time. The boost this year was an investment, not natural growth. The ticket sales and viewership numbers don’t cover the overhead costs. Networks, the NBA, and brands threw a ton of money in network deals and endorsement money to try and scale the league and ride on Caitlin Clark’s draft class drama. Whether it increases interest long term is yet to be seen.
