Starting over; this is my new treehouse. I nuked my much larger account for reasons I can't tell you. I speak at conferences, write books, pet all the animals.

The name Fifty Steps Studio comes from years as a marathon runner. Runners need water, but when you slow to a walk to get water, it is easy to just… keep… walking for a long time. So, walk fifty steps, then start running again. Get it? It's like a metaphor or something.

Four years ago today, a gunman entered Robb Elementary in Uvalde and opened fire—killing 19 fourth-graders and 2 teachers. Here’s how our Governor and Attorney General reacted: “It could have been worse.” Greg Abbott “We can't stop bad people from doing bad things.” Ken Paxton VOTE THEM OUT.

@PizzamanRe76387 @JeffRoushPoetry Wow. I worked in manufacturing, where a number of our line workers doing repetitive work were developmentally disabled. I speak gently and respectfully to them, as I did to this man. Please express your ignorance elsewhere.

There’s a young man who bags groceries at my local Kroger whom I have long tried to avoid. He seemed nice, but was agonizingly slow. But today, I ended up in his lane and found he’s improved markedly. So I looked at him and told him I noticed how much better he’s gotten. (Thread)

Every year, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil. #MemorialDayWeekend

@DannyDeraney My great uncle was drafted, ready to fight, and was made a cook. He crossed Omaha Beach a couple of days after the first landing, when the advance troops had created a beachhead. He was still cooking at the Battle of the Bulge and all the way through the end of the war.

If you're worried about ticks, put up an owl box. The animal driving most Lyme disease in the eastern US is the white-footed mouse. Ticks that feed on them are far more likely to come away infected than ticks that feed on other animals. The bigger the local mouse population, the worse the next year's tick year. A single barred owl pair raising chicks can take hundreds of rodents in a breeding season. Owls also don't carry Lyme. The bacterium can't survive their digestive tract, so an owl that eats an infected mouse is a dead end for the disease. Researchers at the Cary Institute, the leading lab on Lyme ecology, have been explicit about this: "Landscapes that support predators have reduced Lyme disease risk." One owl box on its own isn't going to fix a tick year. But a yard with owls, foxes, bobcats, and weasels in it has fewer mice, and a yard with fewer mice has fewer infected ticks. If you have woods or fields nearby, a properly sized barn owl or screech owl box (different species, different boxes) is one of the most useful single things you can do for tick exposure at the landscape scale. Match the box to the owl that lives near you. The mouse is the problem, owls are the solution.

@mass_ave Agreed. We wanted to get psyched for the pace lap, but instead we were so tense. Big machine guns hanging off the side, the choppers apparently getting close to the fence and each other, and the Big Brother Government Is Watching You vibe. No thanks.

@mdvirgilio Close friends, intensely serious about their Christian faith, were never able to have kids (like Abram and Sarai). I will let them know you have condemned them for eternity. How Jesus of you.

It bums me out how many families have only two kids. It’s a pandemic! Do they really only believe they can only handle two? What’s up with that? I know the answer; it's a rhetorical question. I think it’s bordering on sin for a couple to limit themselves to having two children, for whatever reason. At best it’s a cliché. We’ve attended a goodly number of churches over the decades, and since I’ve become a full-on natalist it distresses me how many families have two children. I’m not saying all Christian families have to go old school and have ten kids like our ancestors, but as I told a young friend of mine recently and my daughter as well, you will never, ever regret having more children. You get to bring more image bearers of God into the world, and into eternity, to love and nurture and raise. So, young Christian couples, be fruitful and multiply! It’s not a suggestion.

@OnDisasters It ended that close because because they had a one lap shootout. The prior 199 laps were good entertainment but let’s not pretend they raced for 500 miles and finished so close

Being an Euro, my mates can´t understand ovals ("tHeY jUSt tUrn leFt 🤪") These guys raced at +200 MPH for 3 hours surrounded by a wall, with the cars separated by LESS than a parking space on the mall. And ended THIS close. This was my Ted Talk

@garnes_megan @JeffRoushPoetry *sighs in Midwestern* I didn’t create a mess or make anyone sad, and I wouldn’t. He was just concerned I might put them on the ground. By the way, since that episode, he recognizes and greets me each time.

@50StepsStudio @JeffRoushPoetry Patronising and making someone sad. I see how you roll. You, who was leaving your recycling bags on the ground? If the bin was full, take them home and reuse them yourself or try again another day

It’s so disappointing that Katherine Legge only completed 18 laps; however, this doesn’t mean as much in reality. If Legge doesn’t swerve, it would’ve been one of the worst crashes I’ve ever seen in the Indianapolis 500. Safety is the top priority. We avoided a disaster.
