PUBLIC ADVISORY: The overnight report of a polar bear sighting on Fogo Island has been confirmed. At least one polar bear is believed to be wandering on the island and the nearby ice. Residents are advised to keep pets and children indoors or under close supervision, travel in groups when possible and avoid areas where wildlife activity has been reported. Properly store and dispose of garbage to avoid attracting bears into communities. Under no circumstances should anyone approach a polar bear. If you encounter a polar bear: •Remain calm •If it has not seen you, quietly back away and leave the area •If it has seen or smelled you, give it space, back away slowly but do not run. •Avoid direct eye contact and never come between a bear and her cubs. Fogo Island RCMP is monitoring polar bear activity and is in contact with the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands. Polar bears are commonly observed in the area during this time of year. Polar bear sightings on Fogo Island should be reported to the Forestry Management Office at 709-674-1521 or to police at 1-800-709-RCMP (7267).
