I am thrilled to share the news that Fractile's mission to build chips and systems that unlock the next generation of AI scaling has been bolstered, with a $220M funding round led by Accel, Factorial Funds, and Founders Fund, alongside some incredible backers old and new. AI inference is driving the defining infrastructure buildout of the 21st Century. We've written a bit about where we think capabilities must go, and how Fractile is working to bring this about: fractile.ai/news/fractile-… It has been a privilege working on one of the hardest but most rewarding technical challenges of our time for over three years, with the most brilliant, kind and driven people I could have ever hoped to work alongside. We are still just getting started. There is a lot to be done to deliver on our goals, but we are grateful to have the support of so many people in chasing these down every minute of every day. Thanks, all, for being part of the Fractile mission! 🚀 @fractile_ai

Finance Agent Benchmark v2 is here. Finance is one of the most lucrative applications of AI where much of the busy work could be automated. That’s why we rebuilt our Finance Agent Benchmark to push frontier models even further. We designed V2 to better reflect what financial analysts actually do: refined taxonomy reflecting real workflows, an improved harness with more tools, and jury-based evaluation. The result: no model cracks 52%. Would you trust a financial analyst who’s only correct half the time?

“The greatest competitive programmer the US has ever produced” 🎯 Scott’s a legend, and I’m proud to call him a friend after he worked with us @Addepar. Don’t try to beat him at mental math. @8VC was an early backer of his in his next two ventures. Cognition continues to excel.
Colossus@colossusmag

Scott Wu is the co-founder of Cognition AI, one of the fastest-growing companies in history. He’s also the greatest competitive programmer the US has ever produced. You may have seen him doing impossible card tricks and mental math. You’ve never seen him asked about weed, Michael Jordan, cancer, and human consciousness over a punnet of strawberries. That is what Colossus editor-in-chief Jeremy Stern did on a recent visit to San Francisco. For those less familiar with @ScottWu46: In 2nd grade, he entered a math competition for 7th graders, lost, and was so furious he still fumes about it 20 years later. The next year he entered the 9th-grade division as a 3rd-grader and got a perfect score. Then he won first place at the US national middle-school math competition and three straight gold medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics, where he became the greatest American gold-medalist and coach in history. Most of the people running the biggest AI companies met as teenagers, competing for their countries on international math and science teams. OpenAI’s Greg Brockman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Meta’s Alexandr Wang, to name just a few. Most agree that the von Neumann among them was Scott Wu. In November 2023, a few weeks after his mother died of lung cancer, on the day Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI, Wu founded his own AI company: Cognition. He was 26 and saw earlier than almost anyone that AI would converge on agents that work in the background, 24/7, like coworkers. He shipped Cognition’s AI software engineer Devin in March 2024. It worked poorly, and he took intense public criticism for it. Now, in its first 18 months of service, Devin has generated $445 million of revenue run rate and usage has doubled every eight weeks. The US Army, Goldman Sachs, and Mercedes-Benz are all customers. Cognition is raising at a valuation around $25 billion. @JeremySternLA sat down with Wu, the emperor of the nerds, to ask the questions we’d all ask one of the smartest people in America—building the most consequential technology of our generation—if we ever got the chance. As well as MJ and weed, they talk about the cluster of competitive math prodigies behind so much of AI, what makes us human when AGI arrives, and why Wu believes he was put on this earth to teach AI how to code. Read the piece below.

Exclusive: @GallatinAI Wins First Place at @cerebral_valley's National Security Hackathon (by Army xTech) El Segundo reigns supreme in SF. Gallatin AI took first place with an agentic radio agent built on @PalantirTech's Maven Smart System in 24 hours. The team of three: @danbuci (Co-Founder & CTO), Jake Siegel (AI Engineer), and Justin Oh (Software Engineer). On the battlefield, radio waves can quickly become overloaded, leading to missed critical information. A Marine may only have a small radio and a battered field notebook, which makes capturing large volumes of information difficult and results in lackluster data reaching senior decision makers. Justin Oh experienced this friction firsthand as a former active-duty Marine Corps field artillery officer. The agent receives radio traffic, turns it into a transcript, creates summaries for senior leaders, and directly actions enterprise Army systems such as updating Maven Smart System’s Gaia map and Gallatin’s Navigator Defense Logistics software. The agent supports capturing and understanding both tactical Green Gear as well as more advanced MANET radios such as the Persistent System’s MPU5. Atoms Not Bits saw multiple successful live demos firsthand. In one final-pitch scenario, the agent updated an infantry unit's location on a map visualization based on what they radioed in. Another covered resupply. @cerebral_valley’s 3rd annual National Security Hackathon was unique in that the U.S. Army put up the prize money. Problem sets included Sensor Analysis and Integration, Edge Deployments and Drone Operation, Mission Command and Control, Digital Defense and Cybersecurity, and General National Security. Over 100 teams participated, ranging from Stanford students to engineers at frontier AI labs. The event was hosted by @cerebral_valley and @ShieldCapVC. @GallatinAI, Inc. has raised $15M+ led by @8vc. The day job is AI-powered logistics for the Department of War, which makes the resupply scenario the most natural bridge between this side project and the core business.

We at @8vc are excited to lead the seed round for Valius Sciences. When @sytses was diagnosed with cancer, he didn’t just follow the standard of care. Instead, he teamed up with @JAC0BSTERN and ran maximal diagnostics (single-cell, bulk DNA/RNA, imaging) then used it to drive treatment decisions. It worked. But few people have the resources to assemble a team of scientists and oncologists to interpret data in the same way. Valius is scaling up Sid's approach to help more patients find actionable markers not identified by standard diagnostics. Read more about Valius here: valiussciences.com/news-insights/…

There's a distinction most people miss about AI coding agents. They assume all agents are basically the same and some just run in the cloud for convenience. But local and cloud agents are as different as writing code yourself and hiring someone to write it for you. A local agent works alongside you. It's in your editor, sees what you see, and waits for you on every step. It's a very good pair programmer, but when you close the laptop, it stops. The ceiling on a local agent is your attention. A cloud agent is a different thing entirely. It has its own machine and its own environment. You can hand it a task and it goes and it just does it. It can work for hours, open PRs, run tests, QAs its own work using computer use, and tells you when it's done. We built Devin to be the second thing. You can just close your laptop and grab a cup of coffee while Devin is working in the background. The difference is so powerful that people get addicted to it. For example, the best engineers at Cognition (folks like @moritz_stephan and @premqnair) can't stand going to sleep or leaving their laptops without starting a few Devins. The problem is that until now, local and cloud agents lived in completely different worlds. You'd plan something in your editor, context-switch to Devin, wait for the PR, then context-switch back to touch it up locally if you needed to. Windsurf 2.0 puts the whole loop in one place. We built an Agent Command Center so you can manage all your agents - local and cloud - from one place.
Windsurf@windsurf

Introducing Windsurf 2.0. Manage all your agents from one place and delegate work to the cloud with Devin - so your agents keep shipping even after you close your laptop.
