First, let me say that’s a totally reasonable response from you. I appreciate it, sincerely. To be clear, if I wasn't on Monday's show, I actually understand why Penny might get another year -- and I’m totally OK with it. I honestly think it’s the easiest thing to do, for a lot of different reasons, and if he’s back for Year 9, that’s exactly what I’ll say — that I understand why, that I’m OK with it, and that I hope it goes well. My only issue is when I hear folks say stuff like “You cannot fire Penny after one bad season” because it’s not just one bad season. It’s actually more bad seasons than good (at least relative to preseason expectations) with a list of postseason accomplishments that falls short of any other Memphis coach who has had that job this long in our lifetimes. So when I say “it’s been eight years of bullshit,” I don’t mean every minute. Last season was obviously good/fun. Other seasons have been too. But, broadly speaking, this has been a subpar eight-year run relative to any normal historical standard at Memphis, and that’s why I get frustrated when I hear some suggest otherwise, and that’s what led to what you heard me say on Monday's show. Anyway ... Here’s the truth: You and I don’t agree on this situation — but we do both care deeply about our alma mater and that athletic department. I want what’s best for it. I know you do too. If that’s Penny, great. I’d love to interview him at the Final Four someday. I’m just worried that this thing has gotten to such a bad place that it’s going to be hard for him to pull out of it, especially with a dwindling fanbase. That acknowledged, if Penny does get a Year 9, wins the conference, wins back over the fans and then goes on a 10-year run of awesome stuff, I promise I'll be out in front celebrating it, hand to heart. I'll root for him until it's over, whenever that is. Either way, I just didn’t want to watch your message and ignore it because, again, I thought you were reasonable and kind in response. Thank you for that. #GTG.
