@sciencegirl Percy Shaw’s reflective road studs became one of the most influential road-safety innovations of the 20th century. Hard to imagine how many lives he saved by simply taking the time to #payitforward.

In 1933, British inventor Percy Shaw is said to have been driving at night on a foggy road in Yorkshire when he nearly drove off the edge. He later explained that the reflection from a cat’s eyes in his headlights alerted him to the road’s boundary. That moment inspired him to design a permanent reflective road marker that would guide drivers in darkness and poor weather. Shaw patented the device in 1934 and began manufacturing it through his company, Reflecting Roadstuds Ltd. The invention, later known as the Cat’s eye (road stud)- used rubber housing and glass reflectors that were naturally cleaned by passing car tires. To encourage adoption, Shaw initially supplied them free or at very low cost to local authorities to demonstrate their effectiveness. Their success led to widespread installation across Britain, especially after World War II. As for value, Shaw retained control of his patents and company during his lifetime and became financially successful. Estimating what the idea might be worth today is speculative, but modern road stud and reflective safety industries are worth many millions globally. If fully commercialized worldwide under exclusive ownership, the concept could potentially represent a business valued in hundreds of millions of dollars over time.
