Happy to report that both Houses of Parliament passed my bill banning #plastic covers on books in Islamabad with immediate effect. In a landmark environmental victory for Islamabad Capital Territory , the Prohibition of Plastic Book Covers Bill, 2026 is a decisive step against single-use plastics and the toxic “forever chemicals” devastating our health and environment. Plastic can take up to 1,000 years to decompose. It is choking our rivers, storm drains, landfills and coastlines while leaving dangerous microplastics in our food, soil and water. The world has generated over 400 million tonnes of plastic waste, yet only 9% has been recycled. Pakistan alone produces nearly 3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with much less 3 % recycled, that too in the informal sector. The law imposes upwards of aRs50,000 fine for first-time violations, because the cost of inaction is far greater. Citizens need to please also take action in reporting violations that are becoming normalised. I will be checking all big retailers from next month, because they need that much time to discard such materials. This is about protecting public health, our ecosystems and future generations. Islamabad green areas are already under pressure from urban construction.
