VIP Culture: I pass through Mall Road, Lahore almost every day and have noticed a sharp increase in traffic being stopped or diverted whenever a ‘VIP’ passes. This isn’t just for the Chief Minister or Governor but now, even Judges, Secretaries and Ministers are also influencing traffic flow when they pass, causing avoidable and unnecessary delays for the public. Mohtarma @MaryamNSharif has done phenomenal work which is appreciated but this blatant example of VIP culture must be limited not only to improve the public perception of this government but also to show that every citizen is equal and has an equal right to mobility. Watching officials use multiple vehicles and security escorts on taxpayer funds erodes the fundamental trust between the populace and its elected representatives. More often than not, the ‘protocol’ accorded to officials is for pomp and show rather than any genuine security concerns. At least traffic should not be stopped or diverted except in exceptional cases.
