as the House marks up kids’ online safety bills, small tech #startups are warning that ASAA’s one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t keep kids any safer👀

Today, @HouseCommerce advanced eight bills to the House Floor, including the KIDS Act, App Store Accountability Act, and Sammy’s Law, alongside five energy security bills. @HouseGOP will ALWAYS stand with parents and families over Big Tech and put America’s needs first. In committee today: The federal version of the "App Store Accountability Act". This bill empowers parents with essential controls over kids' app access and downloads.

Android has always driven innovation in the industry through its unique flexibility and openness. At this important moment, we continue to be at the forefront of how developers distribute their apps and games on billions of devices globally. Today we are announcing big changes: – Leading the way in store choice: A registered app store program that makes installation of participating app stores easier with a streamlined flow – A new business model for Google Play with lower prices for developers: The ability to use your own billing alongside Google Play Billing, and lower service fees. These changes will make for a stronger Android ecosystem with more choice for users and even more successful developers who can further invest in higher quality experiences on mobile and beyond. The above will be rolling out in phases, subject to local laws and processes. We are also excited to announce that we’ve resolved all our disputes with Epic Games globally! Details on all of this can be found at our blog post. android-developers.googleblog.com/2026/03/a-new-…

I do find it funny that @actonline's general proposition has shifted from the App Store Accountability Act being problematic because it would prove their members violate COPPA regularly (or at least they would now have to comply with the law) to Apple having a speech interest in contracting with kids. What world we live in.

"At its core, the App Store Accountability Act rests on a simple principle: Trillion-dollar corporations should not be entering into binding commercial relationships with minors." The App Store Accountability Act protects children and empowers parents with the ability to decide what apps their kids should be able to access on their smartphone.
