@Mklovesdr Studies show that properly stored lyophilized anti-venom can retain its neutralizing efficacy for up to 20 years, or in some cases even 30 years, beyond its labeled expiration date.

I had an 11 year old patient who got bitten by a snake with cytotoxic venom. The only antivenom we had in the hospital had expired in 2014. I had to watch the patient's platelets drop from 300 to 1 not being able to do anything, watching blisters form from the snakebite

@michellmybell1 @rikki_5 @uppityhobbit It ain't necessarily so. Some people have it harder than their parents did, and other people have it easier then their parents did. People love to make generalizations based on their own experience.

First of all. Many new grandparents aren’t boomers. We are GenX. Also as many people have pointed out, a lot of them are still working. Personally. I am the daycare for my grandbaby. I adore her and I wouldn’t have her in institutionalized daycare for anything BUT after raising my own four sons (full time stay at home homeschool mom) I was really looking forward to more freedom to go visit my parents, time to work on my business, time to acquire new skills, etc. I know she is more important than leveling up my weaving or selling another shirt or whatever - but still, I kinda wanted to do my own thing, y’know?
Nina@NinaPanickssery

Genuinely curious—why don’t more people use their own parents/kid’s grandparents for childcare as opposed to daycare/preschool/nannies (which seem more common)? Is it common for boomer grandparents to show disinterest in their grandchildren?

@NinaPanickssery i don't think it's useful to talk about "boomer grandparents" or "Gen X grandparents," as if it's the generation they're part of that shapes their attitudes rather than simply their age and the realities of modern life.

@JunusAnna @gtmom @NinaPanickssery @Yahskapar Why do you think menopause evolved in humans when it didn't in other mammals? The so-called "grandmother hypothesis" is that natural selection favored families where the grandmother helped take care of her children's kids instead of continuing to have kids of her own

@gtmom @NinaPanickssery @Yahskapar Why are you expecting your parents to raise your kids? Older women don't have the stamina to keep up with littles all day every day. A few hours a week is what they can handle. And also - you could move again- and again- and again - and you expect them to follow?

My boomer uncle bought his house for $68,000 in 1992, Today it’s worth $1,300,000. He always told me I was in the will. Said I’d be taken care of. I spent years thinking I had a safety net. He died this week. The house went to his wife. Who is 61. Who just announced she’s getting remarried. I am not in the new will.

@Her_Nonymous_D Her son shouldn't be the other child's therapist. Now they're friends, and you're meeting up with the criminal family for barbecues. How many other friendships with normal people could he and you as a family, have made instead? I tell my children to stay away from such people

The day my son came home from kindergarten with a black eye, something in me snapped. I was already reaching for my phone, ready to call the school, ready to show up and demand answers. But before I could take a step, he stopped me. “Wait, Mom. Listen first.” So I did, and what he told me shifted everything. He explained that the boy who hit him wasn’t just being “bad.” His dad had just gone to jail, and ever since, he’d been acting out, yelling, pushing, hurting. My son said he had gone up to him, asked if he was okay…

Elon Musk says that extending human life and even reversing aging is highly possible "I've never seen someone with an old left arm and a young right arm ever in my life. That means there must be a synchronizing clock that is synchronizing across 35 trillion cells in your body," If our cells are aging in perfect unison, it means aging is driven by a central, coordinated biological mechanism rather than random, subtle decay "When we figure out what causes aging, I think we'll find it's incredibly obvious it’s not a subtle thing it's just a solvable engineering problem"

Childfree women…what’s the silliest reason you have for not wanting kids. I’m not talking about world problems or financial reasons (because duh) but the ones that others would find dumb. I’ll go first: spending my weekends watching kids sports would be a special form of torture to me 🤣

@sparkledust_15 @ACarinbough @girlsbian_ Yes, if he didn't do that I'd have just went my own way after giving him the money. I get the whole "sometimes it's instinctive" that's why i didn't take the money out his hands like, i didn't yell at him even if i hated the moment

@RealBlackIrish @goldenwagtail @pandawalton Plenty of high IQ people are irritated by citations to statistics that don't make clear the numbers cited are group averages, often with significant variances, rather than generalizations applying to all members of that group. It's just bad form.

Today was the funeral of our 93 year-old neighbour’s wife. She was 92 and they’d been married for seventy years. Their only son died two years ago and there are no grandchildren. We were the only people there. We walked in with him & he said weakly “there’s nobody here”.

@geka9400 @latchky Interesting to read The Nurture Assumption by Judith Rich Harris. Turns out their good behavior is half your genetics and half random luck. Good parenting like yours increases kids' life skills and happiness, but doesn't affect their personalities.

I don’t like talking about this subject normally because it DOES feel conceited to say when you have kids that behave well, but younger kids are a reflection of the way they have been parented and I honestly now feel like I should be able to be proud of the fact that my kids are well mannered.

This might get me cancelled but I feel like people don’t realize 90% of their child’s bad behavior is caused by their parenting. I don’t mean developmentally normal “bad” behavior, I mean the parents that literally can’t control their kids. Your kids learn from your behavior, if you’re constantly screaming at your child like a psycho—why are you surprised they are screaming back? They learned it from you.

@justachuddette @girlsbian_ Don't know why you were offended. Do you not realize just how instinctive & automatic gender coding is in the human brain? When someone is obviously coding male it's very difficult to suppress even if you're earnestly trying to be kind and polite.

@shingujilover @girlsbian_ I think OP was hoping to code female, not hoping to be recognized as trans, because if recognized as trans, that would mean OP was coding male rather than passing for female.

@GalacticPoly That's fair, except by definition "nihilism" is an attitude -- an attribution of meaning to reality, not an objective description of reality. To call something "meaningless" is, ironically, to assign the meaning "it's meaningless" to it. Objectively, it's just a universe.

@ACarinbough I'm not talking about attitudes. Attitudes don't dictate reality. It doesn't matter what attitude we have. I'm looking for truth, not some prescription.

Some people took my description today to represent nihilism and despair. It was not meant to. The absurdity is Camus' absurdity, and while there is no existential purpose, we make our own as we push our own boulders. Like Camus, I imagine Sisyphus is smiling...
Lawrence M. Krauss@LKrauss1

I view life as an essentially purposeless absurd comedy that every now and then rises to the level of tragedy. I have to keep reminding myself of this on days like today when I took it all too seriously and felt devastated by reality for a few hours.
