@Knightly_Hist @Hunteroforcs @gunsen_history Much like 'samurai' the term needs a qualifier as to when and where you're referring to.

@Knightly_Hist @Hunteroforcs @gunsen_history The term 'ashigaru' is an indistinct one. It's used to refer to the irregular bands of mercenaries that you see in the Onin War, as well as the later semi-regular or regular troops formed into units of spears, bows and guns.

The Ashigaru had longer pikes whilst the Landsknechts fought in much deeper formations. Both had firearms, heavily armed infantry and/or cavalry around. Very different yet similar approaches to war. It would be a fascinating clash for us to study, and brutal for them to live.

The sci-fi basing conundrum. Any planet you go to, you're always going to take your base with you. As Crowded House may have put it.

@gunsen_history @ADCPainting Not exactly a landsknecht/tercio pike but similar outcome, once i saw that limp/bend, yeah i'd rather swing this thing downward than have a limp thrusting action

Japanese pikes are longer, on average, and also lighter apparently than European ones from the same period.
