After over half a century as a congregation in Fremont and almost two decades as an LCMS congregation, we are sad to announce that the ministry of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church is coming to an end. We are inexpressibly grateful for all that Our Lord has done for us and our community over the many years, and we pray that His blessing would continue to be upon the city of Fremont that many more would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Our final services schedule is as follows: Sunday, April 12th: Bible Study - 9 AM Divine Service - 10 AM Sunday April 19th: Bible Study - 9 AM Matins - 10 AM Final Divine Service - 3 PM "Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip [us] with everything good that [we] may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."

I am not trying to make my Catholic friends, who I love, angry with this statement. But this entire episode is starting to explain to me why so many Americans were concerned about a Catholic president for so long. I have no interest in Rome trying to dictate American policy. And if it continues to loudly make its opinions heard on our foreign policy, I believe they’re going to find a lot of American Protestants feeling a lot less ecumenical than we have been in the more recent past.

I recall a conversation with a highly intelligent RC student who was asking me some very specific questions about the logic of the Lutheran view of predestination relative to a specific passage in the Summa. When I shifted the conversation to Ephesians 1, arguing that the position was derived from an exegesis of the text rather than philosophical coherence, he looked at me like I had two heads. After more time talking about the issue, it became apparent that he had never actually wrestled with the issue Biblically on anything but the most surface level. He didn't even know what Ephesians 1 was about until I read it to him. This gets at a problem I see often among young students of theology today. There is extensive knowledge of certain elements of the history of dogma (a good thing), but almost no engagement with the Biblical text itself. This direct engagement with the Biblical text really is what is most appealing about the Reformation.
Scott R. Swain@scottrswain

What is most attractive about Reformed theology is its exegesis. In the Reformed tradition, there's an intelligent, and often creative, appropriation of the best of Christian philosophy. But, at the end of the day, a tradition stands or falls on its exegesis of Holy Scripture.

In 1972, 32% of Protestants were Baptists. It's 29% now. Methodists have dropped from 22% to 8%. Non-Denoms have risen from 3% to 30%.
