@jamesinho4 Okay. Then get rid of single family zoning and let the market sort out it. If developers don't think it's profitable, then they won't develop. If high density makes cities less desirable, then they can move to less dense areas.

@SukritGanesh @HousingSpock @pushtheneedle It's not profitable for private developers to build cheap apartments on expensive land with expensive materials to meet expensive building codes. Inevitably the density fanatics will demand the government step in.

in the 1970s the baby boomer generation started becoming households in the workforce and caused a major spike in household growth. we matched their demand with adequate supply in the 1980s and have failed to meet future demands since. this is why housing is expensive.

America is in the middle of a full-blown housing crisis. There are a lot of ways to measure it, but I’ll start with the most basic: We are 7 million units short of what we need to house people. What can we do? Increase the housing supply. It's plain old Econ 101.

@Radle @SenWarren Plenty of construction workers in the country who are willing and able to build new housing. All that needs to happen is for state and local governments to get out of their way and make it legal to build new multi-family housing

@SenWarren Current rate environment won’t allow the growth you are seeking. ‘Just increase supply’ isn’t a solution unless you identify the actor: who should be compelled against their will to create this supply?

@SenWarren Now, turn one page further in your econ 101 textbook and read that the best way to do that is to deregulate and allow entrepreneurs to fill the needs of their communities. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@iBobbyShell @SenWarren The problem is that the market isn't free because local governments have made it illegal to build multifamily housing on ~90% of land in most cities. On top of that, even when it is legal there's a ton of burdensome taxes and regulations that make it expensive/difficult to build.

@MomAngtrades @SenWarren No it doesn't lol. ~25% of construction workers are undocumented immigrants. The number is even higher if you're just looking at the residential construction industry.

@maxdubler Who has the power to change it in California? Would the California building code have to be amended, or would it be possible through state / local reforms alone? 🤔

@CelticsContessa @trouble_man90 Look up the images / videos of dead, maimed, and mangled Palestinian children. Really look at them. I think if you look at those images you'll understand why people are so passionate about this.

@josdfantod @trouble_man90 Okay, then let's stop giving them money for their racist ethno-nationalist project. It's fundamentally opposed to American values.

@AceReplyBoi @fedtanyl I think unfortunately for Israel, most Americans view ethnically or religiously based state projects as inherently evil and antithetical to American values. You can't teach Americans that MLK & Mandela were good & expect them to also think Israel is good .

@fedtanyl I kinda get a chuckle out of “ontologically evil” every time I see it used. Like, you’re right, but knowing that people see the “other side” as an irredeemable natural evil is funny to me. Like it’s such an absurd worldview to hold

@Logicalleft Zoning laws prevent the university from building dorms on most land in Berkeley, that includes commercial zones where office buildings are. Hope this helps.

@tragic_maverick @ChristoSavaides Most other lots owned by Berkeley are either in use with existing structures or are not zoned for dense mixed use multifamily housing, so it's illegal to build dorms. Or both. Again, replacing 100 tents with 1100 units of student housing is good.

Most of the people living in the park aren’t students. And Berkeley owns multiple acres of land. It doesn’t need to be right there. Choosing this location is just another example of Berkeley pushing out residents. They already own a good chunk of land on the area. They choose the rent prices and they created the housing shortage. Berkeley is the problem.

@Jk82396 California doesn't have a significantly higher amount of drug addiction or mental illness than other states. What it has is a significantly lower amount of market rate units for rent per capita. Homelessness is mostly a housing supply issue. To solve it we need to build more.

@Dantistez 1100 units of housing with electricity, a roof, plumbing systems, and heating are better than 100 tents no matter how aesthetically unappealing they are. Hope this helps, r word

@thebosssbaby3 Low Rental vacancies have the strongest correlation with homelessness, above mental health, above government spending, above drug addiction, etc. If you want to reduce homelessness then you have to allow a ton of new market rate housing to be built.

@ChristoSavaides The problem is where are all the homeless going to go? Yeah the one in the right is nice but unless the homeless have a home to go to this specific location is not it

@tragic_maverick @ChristoSavaides Like 10% of UC students experience homelessness, so yes this will go towards reducing homelessness. UC Berkeley wanted to reduce the admissions numbers because they're wasn't enough housing. Do you think that would more negatively effect rich white people or poor minorities? 🤡

How many dorms will be used to the house homeless people? Will the homeless people not housed inside of these dorms still be able to live at the park? Why can’t they choose many of the other areas within the city to develop? They own most of the land and they have a history of displacing poor people and marginalized groups…. That’s why people are concerned. sfchronicle.com/opinion/openfo…
