In the face of the historic power of Hurricane Melissa, I am praying for the people of Jamaica and all others across the Caribbean caught in its path. This storm has already claimed the lives of individuals on several Caribbean islands, including Jamaica. Its potential for devastation is unmatched and must not be underestimated. Additionally, we cannot forget the many Caribbean Americans across this nation who are dealing with anxiety and fear for their families who will be directly impacted by this approaching storm. As the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, I've seen how powerful community can be in the face of adversity. For many of us with roots in the Caribbean, hurricanes are a familiar threat. However, it is still essential to prepare for whatever this storm may bring. I urge everyone in Hurricane Melissa’s path to seek shelter, listen to the guidance of your local leaders, follow weather reports closely, and – above all – stay safe. We must remain vigilant, compassionate, and resilient throughout this storm and until it passes. The ties between Brooklyn and the Caribbean are unbreakable, and I will do everything in my power to support all recovery and relief efforts that may lie ahead. “May we all find strength and comfort during this time of uncertainty from our faith and community.
