I think high average Jewish IQ may predate the Sephardi/Ashkenazi split.
Sephardim had Ashkenazi-level achievement in Spain. Italian Jews (who belong to a third group) dominated journalism and were wildly overrepresented in academia, the upper echelons of the military, and other high-status professions. When Sephardim came to Britain in the 18th century they produced figures like David Ricardo and Benjamin Disraeli. Maimonides and Moses de León (author of the Zohar) were Sephardim. Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (arguably the most important religious philosopher besides Maimonides) was Italian. Spinoza—the most important pre-20th century secular Jewish philosopher—was Sephardi.
There were historically unique opportunities to manifest genius in early 20th-century America and Western Europe. By that time, the Sephardic population had been decimated through intermarriage (they started mass intermarrying 100 years before Ashkenazim) and the bulk of the population was concentrated in the Ottoman Empire.
Would Einstein have come up with the theory of special relativity if he had been running around Istanbul wearing a fez? Hard to say.
Hopefully will be resolved with ancient DNA.

Les intégristes d’extrême droite donnent souvent l’impression de n’avoir jamais quitté leur caverne. Ils croient aimer la France, mais ils déteste surtout le reste du monde. C'est fondamentalement différent. Ils parlent de civilisation avec une ignorance abyssale des beautés du monde : palais marocains, grandeur de l’Égypte, sagesse grecque, vestiges de Pétra, stūpas d’Asie, cerisiers du Japon, civilisations mayas, cultures arctiques… À force de ne regarder que leur clocher, ils finissent par rater l’humanité.

Hong Konger don’t drink tap water. And I have seen zero Chinese diaspora drinking directly from the tap in the UK or the US. Drinking cold water from the tap is a very European thing due to coincidence of urban epidemics and difficult to boil water in the 19th century.

I've been telling people all day that you cannot draw the conclusion that racial IQ gaps are "genetic" from Reich's paper.
This is because we don't have enough Sub-Saharan African ancient DNA to conduct a similar study on population groups in that region, and, in fact, don't even have enough contemporary genetic IQ data to meaningfully determine which specific genetic variants in African groups might be associated with intelligence.
