Today, I am proud to celebrate a historic milestone with the official establishment of the United Nations Association of Iraq (UNA-Iraq). This achievement reflects our shared commitment to advancing the values and principles of the United Nations, including peace, sustainable development, human rights, international cooperation, and youth empowerment throughout Iraq. As President of UNA-Iraq and Founder & CEO of the Iraqi Youth Model United Nations (IYMUN), I am honored to work alongside dedicated colleagues, partners, and supporters who believe in strengthening Iraq's engagement with the international community and creating new opportunities for dialogue, leadership, and civic participation. The establishment of UNA-Iraq marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. We are committed to connecting Iraqi citizens, institutions, youth leaders, academics, and policymakers with the work of the United Nations and the global network of United Nations Associations. Our next major goal is to secure membership in the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) in August 2026, further strengthening Iraq's role within the global UNA family. I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported this journey. A Decade Written in Fire and Hope The Story of Haitham Shakarchi Today, I mark ten years of professional life. Ten years of work, growth, and relentless pursuit of something greater. But my story did not begin ten years ago. It began in a city that has known both beauty and destruction, Mosul. The Beginning: A Childhood Interrupted I was born into the Al-Shakarchi family, surrounded by love, stability, and dreams that felt within reach. My childhood was full of warmth family gatherings, friendships, education, and a sense of belonging. Then came the years after 2003. Everything changed. In 2005, I was a school student walking home, a boy with a backpack and a head full of dreams. In an instant, that life was stolen. I was kidnapped by a terrorist group. For ten days, I lived in a void of darkness and uncertainty. I heard the whispered threats; I felt the cold weight of fear. My family paid a ransom to bring me back, and while my body returned, the boy who left that day stayed in that darkness. I came back alive, but something inside me had shifted forever. I had learned, far too young, how fragile life truly is. When Life Breaks You… Again In 2006, life tested me again. A simple moment playing with my cousins in a swimming pool turned into another turning point. I slipped, hit the back of my head, and lost my memory for three months. Three months erased. Moments, faces, feelings gone. And as if that was not enough, that same year, terror struck my family once more. Our home and my father’s factory were bombed. We were threatened again. That was the moment we made a decision no family ever wants to make: We left everything behind. We fled to Aleppo. Leaving wasn’t just about geography. It was about leaving parts of ourselves behind—family, friends, identity, and a sense of home. Chasing Education in the Dark In 2009, I returned to Mosul secretly. Not to stay. Not to live. But to take my final high school exams. No teachers. No classrooms. Just me, my books, and determination. I passed. But with a grade that closed the door to my dream of studying medicine. So I left again—this time to Kharkiv, joining Kharkiv National University to study medicine. I succeeded academically. I achieved strong grades. But something didn’t feel right. So I made a decision many would fear: I walked away. I returned home and started over studying translation at the University of Mosul in 2011. For two years, life felt almost normal again. Then 2014 came. When a City Falls When ISIS occupied Mosul, it didn’t just take a city. It took dreams. It took futures. It took lives. I tried to continue my education, traveling briefly to Kirkuk, but my family remained trapped. I had to return. Eventually, like many others, I made the hardest decision of my life: To escape. In 2015, I hid in a truck, pretending to be a vegetable seller. If discovered, the punishment was immediate death. At the Syrian border, fear became real in its most brutal form. Bullets were fired. People screamed. Children fell. Chaos surrounded us. I remember the sound of gunfire. I remember the prayers whispered between breaths. I remember not knowing if the next step would be my last. Our discussion focused on advancing future cooperation between The Republic of Iraq and the State of New York, particularly in areas of governance, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. Mr. Jacobs expressed his strong support and genuine commitment to building a lasting partnership that promotes progress, mutual understanding, and a brighter future for both communities.

IYMUN Leadership Meets with H.E. Ambassador Glenn Miles to Discuss Youth Empowerment, International Cooperation, and Strategic Support Erbil, 8 May 2025 — Following a generous invitation from H.E. Ambassador Glenn Miles, Ambassador of the Australian Embassy in Iraq, the leadership of the Iraqi Youth Model United Nations (IYMUN) had the pleasure of meeting with him and Mr. Elliott Mann, Second Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs, at the Rotana Hotel in Erbil. H.E. Ambassador Miles and Mr. Mann congratulated Mr. Haitham Shakarchi, Founder and CEO of IYMUN, and Mr. Saoud Al-Rassam, Manager of IYMUN, for the success they achieved in previous editions of IYMUN, as well as for the preparations underway for the upcoming Fourth Edition, which will take place in Mosul from 21 to 29 June 2025. They discussed the pivotal role that IYMUN plays in empowering Iraqi youth in the areas of diplomacy, international relations, economic growth, and in advocating the mission of the United Nations in Iraq and globally. One of the key highlights of the meeting was the introduction of a groundbreaking new program, the first of its kind in Iraq, which will offer 1,000 online job opportunities for university students and fresh graduates from Nineveh—a major step by IYMUN toward tackling youth unemployment and promoting digital workforce engagement. They also addressed the importance of youth participation in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need for young Iraqis to be active contributors to democratic change and national progress. Furthermore, they discussed how to encourage Iraqi youth to engage in international relations as a means to strengthen global connections and future opportunities. Finally, H.E.
