I am a journeyman pipe fitter who went through a 5 year union apprenticeship program. You would be shocked at how many young men threw away the opportunity along the way. Mostly it wasn't because they didn't want to work hard. It was more that they couldn't show up on time. Had huge issues with authority, and refused to listen to their foremen. Or couldn't resist smoking weed and failing drug tests. I was also involved in trying to hire up for big jobs my company got, and it's a huge challenge. I don't think H1B's are the answer to blue collar labor, but the challenges that companies have are very real. Finding good labor, even when the pay is extremely high, as it was in my area of commercial pipefitting and plumbing, is super hard. The problems that need to be addressed go way beyond paying people more. There are deep cultural issues.
On the other hand. Virtually all of the people that made it though the apprenticeship bought houses in their early to mid 20's and started families by their early 30's.

Elon, no. This is the worst opinion you have, and it’s going to alienate you from the 50% of Americans who still like you, and leave you politically homeless.
America does not have a shortage of workers. We have a shortage of companies willing to train American workers and pay them fairly. They want to bring in foreigners and pay them shit.
This is the number one thing tearing our country apart. It’s the cause of the immigration crisis, the fentanyl crisis, the collapse of the middle class, the hatred of the rich, and the rise of socialism.
I’m all for changing the regulatory environment to make it easier for companies to recoup the cost of training American workers.
But saying there’s a shortage of Americans who can and will work hard is insulting and, worse, false.
