Furthermore, pervasive safety crises, with nearly 65% experiencing security breaches and nearly 40% enduring sexual harassment have triggered a massive attrition rate where the majority of women exit the industry before reaching 15 years of service. The report serves as an urgent call to action, demanding mandated gender policy enforcement, safer working environments, and fair economic structures to retain female talent and protect the future of pluralistic journalism in Kenya. The @AMWIK State of Women in Media in Kenya Report 2026, exposes a systemic leaky pipeline driven by deep structural inequalities, economic insecurity, and safety threats. Despite strong educational qualifications, women journalists face a steep glass ceiling, making up a only 2.8% of media owners and 3.7% of managing editors. This lack of leadership is coupled with job instability, where nearly 60% of women operate in vulnerable freelancing, internship, or correspondent roles, and fewer than 14% secure permanent employment.

Why do Kenyan women continue to be violated and killed simply for trying to live their lives? Women are being attacked at home and in public spaces, yet too often the blame shifts to the victim instead of the perpetrator. At a time when many women are already carrying the weight of a difficult economy, failing healthcare, unemployment, and rising costs of living, they are also expected to live in constant hypervigilance just to stay safe. The calls by organizations like FIDA Kenya, the Law Society of Kenya, civil society groups, and citizens demanding accountability and stronger action against femicide matter deeply. Dedicated GBV courts with enforced timelines are overdue to help reduce case backlogs, fast-track justice for survivors and families, and ensure perpetrators are held accountable without years of delay. The National Police Service must also be retrained and equipped to treat GBV reports as emergencies, not “domestic issues.” More must be done to protect wanawake na wasichana. The fight for a better Kenya must also be a fight for the safety and dignity of women, not just by women, but by everyone in society. #EndFemicide

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE ESCALATING CRISIS OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND FEMICIDE IN KENYA @AMWIK expresses its deepest condemnation regarding the alarming surge of Gender-Based Violence (#GBV) and femicide across the country. Our mothers, sisters, daughters, children and colleagues are being murdered, assaulted, abused and silenced in spaces that should offer safety. We are no longer dealing with isolated incidents of domestic disputes but a full-blown national security and public health crisis. Read More here: amwik.org/wp-content/upl… #ENDGBV

.@janegodia , representing @WanifraWIN, shared sobering statistics from recent leadership mapping that highlight a worrying decline in women's representation. While women hold only 1 in 4 positions in media overall, their presence in Kenyan media leadership has actively shrunk, dropping from 22% in 2022 to just 18% in 2024. This disparity extends to content as well, with the latest gender tracking data revealing that women account for a mere 28% of news sources. Furthermore, the vulnerability of women in the industry spans both offline and online spaces. Globally, 50% of women in media experience sexual harassment, but in Kenya, the stakes are significantly higher, skyrocketing to an alarming 80%. @AfroMediaSummit #PanAfricanMediaSummit2026

During a dedicated side event on sexual harassment at the Pan-African Media Summit, industry stakeholders issued a decisive call to action. Addressing the root causes of this crisis, ED, @QueenterMbori emphasized that sexual harassment is fundamentally an issue of power, challenging the industry to find effective ways to hold editors, owners, and gatekeepers accountable. A major drawback to addressing the issue is the failure of existing reporting mechanisms, which frequently expose anonymous complainants and fuel a pervasive culture of silence driven by fear of retaliation. She also appealed to all media entities to partner with @AMWIK and adopt its established model policy on sexual harassment. @AfroMediaSummit #PanAfricanMediaSummit2026
