.@AMWIK, in partnership with @FNF_Kenya, continues to spotlight the structural barriers hindering women’s political participation. As reported in the @NationAfrica , "weaponized online violence" (TFGBV) remains a leading deterrent for women seeking elective office. Our research shows that while we have made strides since 2010, the 23.9% representation in Parliament remains far below the constitutional threshold. We must shift the spotlight from a candidate’s gender to their vision. It is time for political parties and media houses to implement the recommendations in our Gender Scorecard to ensure a safe, inclusive 2027 electoral cycle. "For too long, the political stage has treated women like "flower girls," meant to provide aesthetic appeal and applause for someone else’s agenda. This year, under the theme of Rights.Justice.Action for ALL Women and Girls, we are moving away from mere performance, dancing not for the cameras but for the progress of every woman and girl in this country." - @QueenterMbori, ED, @AMWIK. The media is the bridge between the public and the government. An informed and empowered media enables citizens to make enlightened choices during elections.
Association of Media Women in Kenya@AMWIK

Furthermore, the agreement emphasizes capacity building for media practitioners on electoral processes to ensure that coverage remains consistent, accurate, and ethical across all media. During the session, @AMWIK ED, @QueenterMbori, underscored the necessity of standardized guidelines and training manuals while also stressing the importance of the safety and security of journalists on the frontlines. Echoing this sentiment, @IEBCKenya's Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana, Chairperson of the Voter Education, Partnerships, Communication & Stakeholder Engagement Committee, emphasized that trust is the foundation of this partnership. He noted that the media is essential in helping citizens navigate electoral mechanics and serves as the primary line of defense against the dis/misinformation.

To facilitate a fair and inclusive environment, the @ORPPKenya is focusing on three sharp pillars of compliance: ✅Enforcing Internal Party Democracy: Monitoring party constitutions and nomination rules to ensure they are not just gender-neutral on paper but gender-responsive in practice. ✅The Political Parties Fund: We will continue to use the leverage of the Political Parties Fund to incentivize the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities. ✅Capacity & Safety: We are working to ensure that the environment within parties is free from violence and harassment.

"We are at a defining moment in our democratic journey. As we look towards the 2027 General Election, the Two-Thirds Gender Principle is no longer just a constitutional aspiration it is a legal and moral imperative that we must fulfil to ensure the integrity of our governance."- John Cox Lorionokou, Registrar of Political Parties @ORPPKenya.

Earlier today, Kenya Editors Guild took part in this crucial conversation ahead of the #IWD2026. "Sixteen years after the promulgation of our Constitution, the Two-Thirds Gender Principle remains a promise yet to be fulfilled. Today, women hold only about 23 percent of parliamentary seats in Kenya—well below the constitutional threshold."~KEG President Zubeidah Kananu #WomenLeadershipKE @AMWIK @FNF_Kenya

How far are our institutions in ensuring the 2/3 gender rule is realized as the 2027 elections loom? 🇰🇪 @AMWIK, in partnership with @FNF_Kenya, hosted government representatives, political parties, private and public sector players and the media for the National Two-Thirds Principle Scorecard Conference. The essence of this gathering was to scrutinize our progress and understand the measures the institutions are are putting in place to meet the constitutional threshold. #WomenLeadershipKE @QueenterMbori @RobiKOchieng @ORPPKenya @KenyaEditors @PLPartyKenya @IEBCKenya @parliamentkenya @UDAKenya @Judiekaberia

"As a researcher, I look at the data, and it tells a story of stagnation. Currently, women's representation in Parliament stands at 23.9%. While this shows slight progress, it falls far short of the necessary 33.3%. We are not just missing a target, we are failing a constitutional test." - @AMWIK Board Chairperson @RobiKOchieng during the National Two-Thirds Principle Scorecard Conference. #WomenLeadershipKE

KEG President Zubeidah Kananu emphasised the role of editors and journalists in shaping whose voices are heard and how leadership is framed. "If we amplify stereotypes or reduce women leaders to narratives about personality rather than policy, we unintentionally reinforce those barriers. But if we choose to tell balanced, fair, and thoughtful stories, we shift the narrative." #WomenLeadershipKE #IWD2026 @AMWIK @FNF_Kenya @ORPPKenya
