The @AMWIK State of Women in Media in Kenya Report 2026, exposes a systemic leaky pipeline driven by deep structural inequalities, economic insecurity, and safety threats. Despite strong educational qualifications, women journalists face a steep glass ceiling, making up a only 2.8% of media owners and 3.7% of managing editors. This lack of leadership is coupled with job instability, where nearly 60% of women operate in vulnerable freelancing, internship, or correspondent roles, and fewer than 14% secure permanent employment.

PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE ESCALATING CRISIS OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE AND FEMICIDE IN KENYA @AMWIK expresses its deepest condemnation regarding the alarming surge of Gender-Based Violence (#GBV) and femicide across the country. Our mothers, sisters, daughters, children and colleagues are being murdered, assaulted, abused and silenced in spaces that should offer safety. We are no longer dealing with isolated incidents of domestic disputes but a full-blown national security and public health crisis. Read More here: amwik.org/wp-content/upl… #ENDGBV

The @AMWIK team paid a courtesy call on @FNF_Kenya to review ongoing collaborative projects and strategize for upcoming third-quarter initiatives, including the next Media Café and an upcoming conference. @AMWIK also provided an update on the recent Women in Media Conference 2026, where FNF was a key partner. To cap off the visit, @QueenterMbori presented the FNF team led by Ralf Erbel and @Judiekaberia with the Friends of the Media Award, which honours @FNF_Kenya's commitment to strengthening Kenya’s media landscape. #Partnerships🤝

During a dedicated side event on sexual harassment at the Pan-African Media Summit, industry stakeholders issued a decisive call to action. Addressing the root causes of this crisis, ED, @QueenterMbori emphasized that sexual harassment is fundamentally an issue of power, challenging the industry to find effective ways to hold editors, owners, and gatekeepers accountable. A major drawback to addressing the issue is the failure of existing reporting mechanisms, which frequently expose anonymous complainants and fuel a pervasive culture of silence driven by fear of retaliation. She also appealed to all media entities to partner with @AMWIK and adopt its established model policy on sexual harassment. @AfroMediaSummit #PanAfricanMediaSummit2026

.@janegodia , representing @WanifraWIN, shared sobering statistics from recent leadership mapping that highlight a worrying decline in women's representation. While women hold only 1 in 4 positions in media overall, their presence in Kenyan media leadership has actively shrunk, dropping from 22% in 2022 to just 18% in 2024. This disparity extends to content as well, with the latest gender tracking data revealing that women account for a mere 28% of news sources. Furthermore, the vulnerability of women in the industry spans both offline and online spaces. Globally, 50% of women in media experience sexual harassment, but in Kenya, the stakes are significantly higher, skyrocketing to an alarming 80%. @AfroMediaSummit #PanAfricanMediaSummit2026

Journalists for Human Rights-🇰🇪
Too many Kenyan newsrooms have watched harassers get promoted instead of punished — moved from desk to desk with a pay rise as their reward. As @AMWIK Executive Director @QueenterMbori put it, that has to stop. 20+ media houses are already making that change. #SafeNewsrooms

Day 1 of the Pan-African Media Summit brought together diverse voices to confront the evolving challenges of the continent's media landscape. There were deep dive panels into Media Sustainability and Independence, Information Integrity between regulators and digital platforms, and a forward-looking exploration of Artificial Intelligence's impact on our information spaces. The summit continues today by shifting its focus toward the practical and social drivers of African discourse, featuring sessions on election preparedness, the role of youth in safeguarding truth, and the vital importance of linguistic diversity in media representation. #PanAfricanMediaSummit2026 @MediaCouncilK @KenyaEditors @KUJ_Kenya @katibainstitute

On the eve of the Africa Forward Summit, @AMWIK is proud to participate in the Social Innovation Pavilion, where our Executive Director, @QueenterMbori, joins a global cohort of thinkers and activists to amplify a powerful truth: African societies already hold the answers to their own transformation. Centered on the themes of resilience, institutional reform, and the preservation of natural resources, the day’s roundtables and exhibitions move beyond fixed conclusions to celebrate the creativity and local knowledge driving change from within. #PavillonInnovationSociale #AfricaForwardSummit #AfricanFutures
