I find it difficult to fully condemn a man who believed a patient’s humanity must not be erased into clinical abstraction. Writers borrow. Poets steal. if Sacks stole a few moments to reveal some inner truths outside the model, at the (regrettable) misdirection of his data, he still offered dignity to his patients, and his poetry will outlive his science.

Given: Observed Event (O) • One 220 PeV neutrino detected, producing a 120 PeV muon • Arrival direction: 0.6° above horizon (zenith angle 89.4°) • Detection date: February 13, 2023, during 335-day observation period • Detector: KM3NeT ARCA at 18.3% completion Detector Specifications • Observation time: 335 days • Detector completion: 21/115 modules (18.3%) • Effective volume: ~0.02 km³ • Effective area for horizontal PeV muons: ~0.6 km² Physical Context • Diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux: Φ(E) = 1.5 × 10⁻¹⁸ × E⁻²·⁵ [GeV⁻¹ cm⁻² s⁻¹ sr⁻¹] • Neutrino-nucleon cross-section at 220 PeV: σ_νN ≈ 6 × 10⁻³³ cm² • Relativistic muon survival constraint: for a 120 PeV muon, γ ≈ 1.1×10⁹ (τ₀=2.2 μs ⇒ τ_lab ≈ 42 min). With stochastic losses (~10% per 270 m) the effective range in water/rock is O(10–30 km). • Note: analyses must condition on detectability—the only worldlines we observe are those that survive to trigger the partial array—so Bayesian comparisons of Eᵢ should explicitly account for this selection when evaluating P(O|Eᵢ). Task: Bayesian Inference Under Anthropic Selection Run calculations only once and report your first results. Part 1: Standard (Non-Anthropic) Calculation Calculate P(O) = probability that this specific observation occurs from known diffuse flux during the 335-day period. Part 2: Anthropic Conditioning Given that we observed this event O, evaluate competing hypotheses E: • E₁: Event from diffuse astrophysical flux • E₂: Event from discrete point source • E₃: Event from transient source flare • E₄: Event is cosmogenic neutrino For each hypothesis, compute the anthropic-conditioned probability: P(E_i ,|, O) = \frac{P(O ,|, E_i) \cdot P(E_i)}{P(O)} Where: • P(O|E_i) = likelihood of observing exactly this event given hypothesis E_i • P(E_i) = prior probability of hypothesis E_i • P(O) = total probability of observation (from Part 1) Part 3: Interpretation The anthropic question: Given that observers exist who detected this event, which hypothesis E_i becomes most probable when we condition on the observation itself? Critically: How does the act of detection reweight our universe of explanations?

I regrettably do have to go to bed. I know this nightly appointment is unwelcome, as you all are NPCs who idle when I log off.
