my house is paid off. no mortgage. nothing owed. got the new property tax bill today. if i don’t pay it, armed men show up and take the house i “own.” i already pay 35%+ in income tax, sales tax, gas tax, capital gains… but apparently that wasn’t enough. so do i actually own anything? or am i just renting from the government with extra steps?

@AStockAccount1 @0xRarest You’re an idiot. I don’t work in the government. I own my own businesses and pay enough in tax, licenses, and fees where more than 55% of my income goes to one government tax/fee/license or another. Which means I work for the government …. I just get nothing in return.

@kojatowski @0xRarest State & local taxes cover things like police, local services, parks, etc. Fed taxes pay for defense & infrastructure. State budgets are funded differently depending on the state. A state w/no property tax usually has a higher sales or income tax. No income tax means more prop tax

Stuff breaks. You pay insurance monthly. Property taxes every year. 3–6% in realtor fees when you sell. And we act like renting is throwing money away. There is a strong argument for renting.

@jonbrooks Except for the recession, there isn't a 5-year period when median home price has gone down since 1980. While you wait for rates to go down prices are going up. If rates go back to 3% we have a much bigger financial crisis upon us. Different people buy/rent for different reasons.

The math broke. You can rent the same house for $2,500… Or buy it for $4,000/month. Buyers aren’t stupid. They’re waiting.
