I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now.

In my 40 years as a United Methodist pastor, I have attended hundreds of funeral services. Today, at Brittany Members Celebration of Life Service, the ending was among the saddest I have ever experienced. When the family was closing her casket, I heard her children crying almost uncontrollably, and it brought tears to my eyes. I also felt anger toward the young men who shot and killed this 38-year-old mother because she refused to let them enter a private post-prom party. I am tired of all the pain these killers cause families and communities when they murder someone. I know some people know who these killers are, and I am praying that they will do the right thing and turn them in to law enforcement or give the information to clergy or community leaders.

My father grew up in the segregated South. He had to walk around to the BACK of a restaurant just to order a sandwich because he was black. THAT was Jim Crow. Not showing a photo ID to vote. You need an ID to: • Board a plane • Cash a check • Buy alcohol • Enter federal buildings But suddenly showing an ID to vote is “racist”? Give me a break. This is not civil rights. This is political theater. The Democrat Party survives by manufacturing grievance because they have nothing else to run on. Comparing voter ID laws to segregation is not just dishonest, it is insulting to the people who actually lived through Jim Crow. Asking Americans to prove they are who they say they are when they cast their vote is called common sense.
