@thekitze In alpha: concave.dev It's a convex-compatible DB runs on Cloudflare, Bun, Node, could even be made to plug into supabase (use it as the backing row, blob, vec store etc...)

i tried making an app with convex. the only use case for me was to have the realtime sync. i just hate the overall concept of it and don't see any other benefits to it. what am i missing? there's still not an easy solution out there to take any postgres db and make it convex-y

concave . dev v0.0.1-alpha.10 is out concave can now run local-first in browsers, electron/expo apps ... also: auth.config.ts support, Vite integration in the CLI, end-to-end UDF tracing, devtools package, and a ton of perf and stability work.

@badlogicgames concave.dev will enable self-hosting a convex compatible DB on cloudflare. It needs some time to mature out of alpha, but it’s coming

anyone here able the dhare their convex self-hosting experience? is it bad ala superbase, or good actually? would consider signing up for convex paid services, but the eu offerings are a bit meh.

@HarryStebbings Pretty much boils down to a variation of Bezos’ quote. “Your marginal customers are my opportunity”

If you want to start a company but don’t have “the idea”. 1. Find a large incumbent that is weak and outdated. 2. Find a segment of customers that is not their core target market. 3. Understand what that customer segment wants but the incumbent can’t provide them without harming the product for their core customer base. 4. Create the standalone product serving those features only, to that underserved base. If your 100% unwavering focus is someone else’s side project, your chances of winning; skyrocket.

@pplanchon_ Yes, right now it's wired up for dev and behind a flag. But I'll add support for custom otel sinks

@remusrisnov No, just in early alpha, repo will go public with first major non alpha release (easier to make breaking changes etc… and not worry about curating PRs for now)

concave.dev 0.0.1-alpha.8 is out. big one: embedded runtime. Run your Convex-compatible backend directly in the browser, React Native, or Electron, no server needed plus HMR in dev, Expo SQLite adapter, and a ton of core stability work

@jamwt Secretly make a second company called concave.dev with last write wins, and use the profits from that to help fund the convex offline sync engine.

People wonder why we haven't shipped our own offline "sync engine" yet. When abstraction magic breaks, you've lost developer trust. Sync engines have to be designed very carefully and communicated clearly to avoid excess magic. If someone says "last write wins," run.

@jamesacowling Did you ever explore dictionary compressed indexes ? For low-medium cardinality, synthetic benchmarks cut SQLite db size in half

We experimented with various compression schemes for Convex data and settled on LZ4. Getting around 50% space savings when persisting new Convex documents internally
