With a second entry, Quirkz Handbooks are now officially a series. Look out, Complete Idiot's Guides for Dummies, there's a new player in town.

@TheGhoulestMom Both of these words are French, and defy common English phonics. I grew up on phonics and like it in general, but I'm not sure that's the issue here.

This is why we need phonics based education again. It’s not about knowing the words but rather being able to decode words you haven’t experienced before. If we taught these kids when ch makes sh and when au makes the ow phonogram instead of sight words they could figure it out.

People are arguing that “silhouette” and “gauche” are not words a high schooler would/should know. Those are middle school vocabulary words, diva

@xwanyex I did not have this experience. Mine didn't care about standing, but did care about requiring all of my attention, and that was equally exhausting.

Everybody talks about sleep and sleep training, but to me the most unreasonable thing about babies is how they always want you to stand when you’re holding them. Don’t even dare sit down. Any particular advantage to standing? Is it more comfortable? Does it help us accomplish anything? Nope. Do it anyway! Do not sit on that couch. I’m going to need you to stand.

@HSRdirector Honestly, I think the closest I've come to dying is because of a ladder and a near miss with a power line.

I’ve witnessed a lot of harm done to my patients from various expected things like cigarettes, guns etc but I never imagined how much harm I would see in my adult patients from ladders. LADDERS. so much devastation

@Romy_Holland Heh. I often think that. It may be the latest stage we've ever been in, but from the perspective of 100 years from now, people are going to laugh about calling it late stage. I have the same issues with "modernism" now being a fairly old thing, or whichever philosopher ...

@saniyafatma1278 Hah! I was going to say, I actually float around a lot and try all the sauces, usually whatever's on sale, but Rao's gives me sticker shock every time. It can't possibly be 5x as good as the other stuff.

@GingerleeXOXO Plain, yeah, they're okay but not exciting. In trail mix, sure, it's balance. Rice pilaf, also okay. Nowhere else; they're a step down from poison in cookies.

@KylePlantEmoji Sure, but if you also consider the important information is up front, then it's kill a fellow there, and friend of Jack second. But in general, yes, avoid messing with any snake first, and use the rhyme only if absolutely necessary to set the level of panic.

A pet peeve I have with mnemonic devices is when the rhyme is detached from the message, if that makes sense. Like this could easily be misremembered as "red on yellow, safe fellow, red on black kills jack" A good example is the "red sky in morning, sailors take warning" one

@mattcrotts Have you ever purchased a bag of grapes? Or a container of strawberries? They're riddled with holes. You can wash them, and the water runs right out, but the fruit stays inside. It's the exact same thing.

Always thought it was hilarious that holes in a little screen on the window of a microwave actually perfectly protects you from radiation The wave just sees a small hole and stops? Amazing. Waves are so dumb

@danadonnelly What sort of breakfast burrito has mustard on it? I can't think of any burrito--or any breakfast item--that comes with mustard.

I know I’m growing up because I forgot to ask for no mustard on my breakfast burrito but when it came I just sucked it up and ate it even though I don’t like mustard. The picky 7 year old inside me was screaming but I said “shut up bitch this is what adults do.”

T. rex went extinct 66 million years ago. Within the chocolate family, Theobroma (the source of cocoa beans) evolved about 10–15 million years ago. The Coffea genus evolved roughly 5–10 million years ago. Ergo, T. rex never would’ve gotten to try its own Tyrannomisu.
